: new carb trouble
layne02 Jul 23rd, 10, 04:49 PM Ok, I just bought a new Edelbrock 1406 carb . I put it on last night, started car up and it ran just fine. I also put on new filter when doing the swap.
Now, today I go out to take car for spin and it fired right up but is running like crap. Barely will stay running and lotta hesitation when I hit the gas. Could it have trash in it already? What does it sound like to ya'll? It seems like it's flooding . I hate to get all excited then get shot down the next day.
Car is a 67 with 327 if that matters.
Skeeter55 Jul 23rd, 10, 05:09 PM When you put the filter on did it get in contact with any of the choke linkage or secondary linkage binding them.
69RS/Z28 Jul 23rd, 10, 05:09 PM Jeff; I'm very much a novice when it comes to carburetion but the first thing I would check is the fuel filters to see if some crap came through the fuel lines and got caught there. Did you do any tuning after you installed the carb? Timing, idle, mixture?
layne02 Jul 23rd, 10, 05:22 PM Filter is an inline filter . I don't see it binding anything up. I did adjust mixture and the idle screws last nite after I put it on. Used a vacuum gauge and it was holding steady at 18. That's the confusing part. It went from running great to not running at all the next day.
Skeeter55 Jul 23rd, 10, 05:27 PM Pull a spark plug and report back, sounds like they may be fouled plugs.
layne02 Jul 23rd, 10, 06:16 PM Ok, pulled a few plugs and they looked ok. I don't think it is plugs. Before I put the new carb on, I had a Summit street and strip on it and car ran great , but I kept having trouble with secondary float level fluctuating and finally figured out the threads that hold the needle and seat were worn and not holding it tight enuff, so, hence the need for the new carb.
The car has ran great just up until today and the only thing I have touched is putting the new carb and filter on.
layne02 Jul 23rd, 10, 07:48 PM Ok, after poking around , I pulled vacuum advance hose off and didn't notice any difference at all in the car idling. Should it change in idle if the VA is unplugged? I could not feel any suction on the carb port when I unplugged it fron there, nor from the VA canister when I unplugged it from there. Is this normal or could it be part of my problem?
murph's 68 Jul 23rd, 10, 07:54 PM Which port on the carb do you have the advance hooked up to? The higher one on the left or the lower one on the right?
Higher to the left of the PCV port is ported and shouldn't show any vacuum at idle.
Lower right is manifold vacuum and should show vacuum at idle.
Z15CAM Jul 23rd, 10, 08:03 PM Sounds like the Float Bowl Needle Valve is not closing and needs cleaning. This happens a lot with carbs New or Used that have been setting around for a time.
layne02 Jul 23rd, 10, 08:05 PM it's hooked up to the one that is on the left of PCV valve , this is supposed to be the ported one. I guess my question is should there be a change when VA hose is unplugged.
layne02 Jul 23rd, 10, 08:09 PM Ron, would it be possible for it to run fine right after installing it and then run bad the next day?
murph's 68 Jul 23rd, 10, 08:15 PM I edited my post. High and to the left as you have it hooked up is ported. I have mine hooked up the same way and see no idle difference when uplugging it. There is no vacuum at idle therefore unplugging it creates no vacuum leak and no idle change.
Check to make sure your carb to manifold bolts are still tight. They may have loosened after an initial heat up/cool down and are now causing a vacuum leak and poor idle quality and running.

layne02 Jul 24th, 10, 10:23 AM Took carb off today and took top off, cleaned everything out with carb cleaner, blew it out with air gun , put it back on and tried it out. Back to running good and holding vacuum steady at 18. So, I'm assuming trash must have gotten into it.
Now, guess I'll move on to the sluggish th350 trans it has in it. Story for another forum. Thanks guys!

Read "Timing and Advance 101" by JohnZ.
And yes, the hose should be hooked to manifold vacuum- you should see the idle speed increase when you plug the hose in. Then lower the idle speed with the screw.
dawg Jul 24th, 10, 12:43 PM carbs dont adjust themselves?
even new carbs need to be tweaked!
