: head and cam suggestion

The motor is a 1980 350 standard bore, rebuilt to stock 5k miles ago, I think 8.5:1 compression. The heads I was thinking of were Edelbrook Performaer RPM 64cc 2.02/1.60 valves and the cam with a lift .487/.490" or .477/.480". The car is a 4spd with 3:42 gears. Sorry for all the all the questions. Any advice on this set up or if you could recomend a better one would be appreciated.

Tortoise, what size tire do you like to run on the rear? Big? Stock? Any idea what EDEL heads will do to compression?

my question would be on your compression ratio vs. the valve size. isn't 2.02 intake valves a little too big for that
compression ?
wouldn't 1.94's be better with 8.5:1 comp ?
but then again, what will 64cc heads raise the compression ratio too ?
what do you plan on using the car for ? the cam seems to be a little big for an everyday driver, if gas mileage is important.
i'd look at running a 650 or 750 carb. most people that i know run a double pump with a four speed, but you'll get different opinions. good luck,
bruce

I was looking to raise compression without re-building the short block. The car is not a daily driver, so I don't really care about gas mileage. How much will these heads raise compression? Also will the bottom of the motor (being stock), will the rods and bearings be able to handle the higher compression ratio?

The rims are 15" with stock tirs 60's.

Tortoise, 235's or 275, either way you dont have a lot of gear here so you want to stick with a relatively mild duration piece. If you had stock 14" different story.

Dont know of any relationship between vlave size and compression. Big valves are preferred. Almost always.

Do you have power accesories that could limit how radical is idle is??

My small block knowledge is iffy, but I would think the heads on the mill are 76cc and you'll be going to 64. Happen to know a fella with 58cc heads all ready to go for sale. Go over to our sister site Team Chevelle and look for "smokumchevy". Think Greg still has some fresh mint small chamber heads for sale.

Guessing the 58/64cc head will land you close to 10:1.

If you tell me how "lopey" you can stand the idle quality, I can come back with a cam suggestion.

Please tell me you wont mind running a solid lifter cam??

Comp 270S-10, .465, 224 duration, or Comp XE268H10 in a hydraulic.

In the Crane lineup PowerMax H278-2, dual pattern 460/490, 224/234. hydraulic or their F278-2 solid. www.cranecams.com (http://www.cranecams.com)

I prefer Craen, but in your app, the Comp 270S-10 would be nearly perfect.
