: Should I remove my vinyl top?
califconstruct Aug 2nd, 10, 01:19 PM I have a 67 rs/ss #'s matching bolero red camaro with a black vinyl top. Literally stock. no engine mods, origional tires, in good condition thru-out.
I am ready to paint it, but just can't bear that vinyl top anymore. The top is in excellent condition, but, I just don't know.
what are the ramifications, if any on removing the top?
the tags do mark it as having a vinyl top.
I am not looking to sell it any time soon.
has the bumble bee stripe in the front.
thinking replacing with white stripes.
should I?

aburgess Aug 2nd, 10, 03:00 PM I just got done painting my car and having my top put BACK on. It had been taken off years ago - and it looks a lot better with it on than off. Very plain-jane otherwise. JMHO - leave it on - you may be tired of looking at it but not many cars still have their's on.

john68 Aug 2nd, 10, 03:33 PM I agree keep the top
ChrisM Aug 2nd, 10, 03:53 PM Red with a black top. That is a sharp car. I'd keep it, but its your car.
Several years ago, I wanted the Z28 stripes on a car I was having repainted. The body guy talked me into the bubble bee instead. I got more compliments on that car. It looked great and stood out from all the other cars. People loved it.
My vote is to keep it, but its your car, do what makes you happy.
Sauron67MM Aug 2nd, 10, 03:57 PM Origional 67 RS/SS?. Why do people feel the need to put rally stripes on a car such as this when they belong on Z28's, Z10's and Z11's? Not to mention they don't look right with the hood louvers. The top is up to you but I would leave it. Are you sure it's not on the TT? It's your car, you can cover it in denim if you want. You did ask in the restoration section.

Yeah what he said!

77thor Aug 3rd, 10, 07:01 AM If it was me... I would remove it, paint the roof, and then re-install it.
You just never know what under there.
chops Aug 3rd, 10, 07:19 AM It's your car, you said you can't bear it.
Regardless whether you put it back immediately, take it off now due to the sins that a top hides.
Either put the top back on while it's in the shop or you can put the top back on any time later. I suggest later.
mahunt Aug 3rd, 10, 09:53 AM Wish my car still had it's vinyl top installed.
Sigh.
1969 RS/SS DROPTOP Aug 3rd, 10, 10:33 AM No.
BPOS Aug 3rd, 10, 10:34 AM I'd definitely remove it before paint, and fix whatever damage is under it. They're easy enough and inexpensive enough to replace down the road. Personally, I don't like them, but that's just me.
PA Camaro Guy Aug 3rd, 10, 12:43 PM Sounds like you need one vote of dissension to maintain balance. :) I have never cared for vinyl tops on cars except a few MOPARS and even though it's limited. Take it off and get some smooth shiny metal up there. :)
lowbuck69x11 Aug 3rd, 10, 02:03 PM I say keep the top--but as others have said,it is your car--do whatever YOU feel. So many people on this forum care way too much about what other people think about their decisions--It is your call !!!
click Aug 3rd, 10, 02:55 PM I love my vinyl top. At car shows you wont see many and alot of folks recall having them back in the 60's and 70's so they notice :D

But as mentioned, there are headaches hiding under them you need to take care of first.

califconstruct Aug 16th, 10, 02:33 PM Well, Thank you all of you, and I think in most part I have been persuaded to keep the vinyl top, but remove it to correct any underlying issues.
I was totally gung-ho for removing it, now, not so much. Although I love the look with out the vinyl, I think the right thing, for this particular model, and matching numbers is to keep it.
The feedback has been most helpful.
Thank's
