I'm working on a '67 with a 396. The sending unit for the water temperature mounts into the intake manifold - not the head like later years. When I went to intall my new one this weekend, I could get it started into the hole and make about one turn before it became VERY tight. I don't want to overdo it and crack the manifold. My question is, were there more than one size of these senders made? By the way, this car has gauges and the wiring calls for the sending unit with the "nail head." Thanks as always for any guidance!

I don't know if this will help but ...

I had never tapped in a set of pipe threads until this weekend. I realized as I was doing it that the tap is slightly tapered and you have to cut the threads so the bolt or fitting goes in as far as you want it to but is still snug. In my case, I was installing a pipe plug into the deck of my block and I had not run the tap far enough in. I had to go a little further to get the plug seated right.

Maybe, assuming you have the correct sensor, you can tap the hole a little deeper and get the sensor to go in farther?
