I just sold some parts to a guy who does land speed racing, 300 mph streamliner stuff.

He stated 69 Camaros will lift the rear end off the ground at high speeds.
The record for stock body is around 230 mph and the car weighed 5,000 lbs! to prevent lift off.
He also said the third gen Camaros are better than the fourth gen. Fourth gen has too much rear lift/lack of downforce. The third gen is better due to the rear deck profile.

sr71bb,
Take note, get some good advice before trying to go faster. Maybe an informative trip to speedweek at Bonneville, or Muroc.

Think about some kind of rear wing or more rake angle.
Big red the Silver State Challenge car went around 220 and it had no "extra" aero stuff on it.
One thing about the LSR info. They run on the salt which has suprisingly good traction, I've driven on it. But it's not as good as pavement, and with full power at speed, the cars may be spinning out due to wheel spin at high speed due to rear lift.
So on pavement you would have less trouble.
I have a video tape of Big Red and will take a look at it and try and get an idea of what they did.

David and sr71bb,

I swear that I read in one of the mag's that Mercury came out with a two speed 9" rearend that they optioned for their '69/'70/'71 Cougar XR-7 Eliminator (or whatever). I'm darn near positive that the car had a second shifter next to and behind the four speed shifter that shifted the rearend pumpkin's two speeds. (I think, at standstill).

I'm sure I've posted this before but, HAS anybody EVER seen or heard of such a rearend???

It was not a GearVenders or a 4+3 Vette type as I recall because I had heard of them.

If it exists, it would make a dandy LSR attempt rearend with a set of the lowest gears a 9" has in it plus a TKO five speed.

I'm really bothered about this and if anybody knows where in the Blue Oval Corp. to call and ask, I will spend the "dime" and call and ask. pdq67

PS. I will even call Dan and R.J. and ask what the "skinny" is on the whereabouts of Big Red if someone will e-mail me a phone number at my home. Sh-t, these guys and their red '69 border on being "Legends".

pdq> I believe it was a "Hone-O-Drive" unit that bolted onto the front of a 9" rearend. They were used on the Mickey Thompson Mustang Bonneville Salt cars. They were not Factory Ford equiptment. Geez I'm old. http://www.camaros.net/forum/eek.gif

Rick -

You're right - Hone Overdrive unit (tough to date yourself, isn't it?). Even earlier, back in the 40's, Blue Oval cars had a factory-optional 2-speed electrically-operated differential made by Columbia ("Columbia rear end", as they were known in those days). Don't start asking me about Stromberg 97's - I remember those too... http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

yes, it was the Eliminator that had some kind of two speed on the nose of the diff.
Hone overdrives were used on some Motion Performance cars.
Gear vendors makes OD's and there are a couple of others too.
Lenco used to make one.
A guy named R. J. Gottleb drove it and did some road racing in California.

Just e-mailed Gear Venders asking about the Cougar Eliminators two speed rearend.
Hopefully will get an answer from someone thats old enough to have been around at the time Mercury used it, if indeed they did.

Will post any reply.

Also called 1-800-FORD-SVT about 30 minutes ago and asked too. The young man that answered said they didn't go back that far. He said that he didn't think FORD has a customer service tech question answering dept. Go figure??? pdq67

Gear Venders e-mailed back and said they thought it was a Hone O Drive likes been posted.
I asked about a bolt-on Gear Venders Muncie trans. application and they said to call back after the first of the year. Seems they got one in the works.
I sure would like to have some sort of overdrive trannie in my car for highway driving, but suspect theirs will cost plenty too. Just like the other modern stuff out there.
Sh-t, maybe an old three speed stick overdrive is what I can afford out of a truck??? I will have plenty of torque to pull three gears. pdq67

Great subject. In the Hot Rod Camaro special issue at the beginning of this year, there was a profile of Levan Prothero's 67 that set the B/Production record of 209.778 in 1971. According to the article, he had a 431 Hilborn injected motor, a super T10 with 2:43's low gear. He alternated between the strip and the salt. For drags, he ran a 5:38 or 5:57 rear, for salt he used a 2:87. Lastly, it went on to say that he added 150 lbs of lead up front and 200 lbs in the rear, filled the stock tank with water and bolted in 100 lbs of batteries for a total weight of about 4000 lbs.

I went to Muroc dry lake a fiew years ago and saw several cars had large tanks in the front and totally blocked grilles. I guess the engines ran off the tank water.

I just reviewed the tape I have. Big red has an aluminum big block 460something, with 750 ft lbs, 800 hp.
the body appears stock with 16" wheels. He mentions the car bottoming out on the skidplates.
He topped out at 220 and averaged 197 mph for the 97 mile run.
The car has a tube subframe with engine set back in the chassis from the looks of it.
Stock body with stock front and rear spoilers. Not much rake to it but hard to tell from the video.

Big Red uses a 540 inch Donavan aluminum big block, a Jerrico 4 speed, and a 2.24 9" Ford rear. R.J. Gottleib still makes some hot laps in it from time to time. Check out "BIG RED" posted on this performance page.
