View Full Version : LT1 Conversion to a 69 Z28
There is a 69 z28 for sale by my house for 3500. It has no rust, has a decent interior, and the body is in great condition. The only thing is that it has a non running, pretty beat down 302, with non matching #s. Im thinking of buying it and sticking a newish LT1 under the hood to make a nice, quick daily driver, but im intrested in knowing if anyone has made this conversion, and if there was any problems they ran into, or hidden money costs. Anyways i hope i get some replys.
Thanks
Toby Keen Dec 26th, 00, 09:46 AM I don't know about the engine swap you want to do but if you will tell me where this car is, I'll beat you over to it and buy it.
Seriously, I don't think you will encounter too many serious problems with the swap as long as you get all the parts from the donor car. I would think parts will be available for anything you will need anyway.
Teetoe_Jones Dec 26th, 00, 03:59 PM I've heard from this guy, who had a friend, that saw an magizine do it once. http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif It can be done. Depending on LT1 used you may run into a few problems. Depending on tranny you use, there will be a few problems (unless it's a T56, then i've got a kit to install that). Let me know if you have specific questions, as i could make this thread 3 pages long with info on this swap.

Let's not forget the 5 or 6 pages I can add to this as well http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif
Seriously.....it would be best to ask specific questions as they arise, as I know for myself, and I'm sure with Tyler and others, it's hard to just sit down and say "this is what you need to do."
You will find a lot of us crawling out of the woodwork who have done this project...so fire away with questions, and we'll see if we can help.
One thing to keep in mind...they are about as many ways to tackle this project as there are people who've done it. I found it's best to see what everyone has to say, and do what works best for you.
Cheers,
David
bzman Dec 28th, 00, 03:52 PM buy the car quick and worry over the conversion later.
davidpozzi Dec 28th, 00, 04:13 PM I'd like to but in here and ask what you guys had to do to the fuel tank to make the fuel injection work?
I'm thinking of going with port fuel injection on my 67 but I'll probably use it on a 406 or 427 18 degree head smallblock.
Did you put the electric pump in the tank?
How did you do it?
Thanks David

Jeff H Dec 28th, 00, 04:30 PM What's up David? I know that there is a place called Rock Valley or something that sells gas tanks for the 67-69 Camaros with an internal electric pump and return line. Car Craft talked about it in their conversion. That might be your best bet to run a FI big block.

Teetoe_Jones Dec 28th, 00, 07:14 PM I agree with Jeff on that one David. That's what 67LT1 (david) did too. I however, did a Bosch high pressure fuel pump externally with new fabbed lines, and a return line that loops back into the pump, instead of the tank.

JimM Dec 29th, 00, 07:10 AM GREAT BIG UH-OH, TEE-TOE!!! I did the loop trick when I put a Holley EFI on a Blazer a couple years ago, DON'T DO IT!! Or, if you do, don't ever run that sucker outa gas!!! If you run outa gas, you end up with a slug of air in the fuel line!! The only way to clear it is to remove the bypass loop and pump the air out. It really sucks. When I replaced the sender in my '68 ragtop last winter, I took the fuel tube outa the old one, shortened the business end, and drill a hole in the new sender and welded it in. When I go EFI, I'll have that 3/8" return line I need.
67LT1 Dec 29th, 00, 09:40 AM I highly recommend the Rock Valley setup.
While a tad expensive ($700 back in 1997),
I have been more than happy with it.
It's a stainless steel tank, designed for the Camaro. It uses original style mounting straps that attach atthe stock locations.
When you order it you specify what it's used for, and they install a good high pressure in tank pump. Also, when i got mine, it came with a VDO GM (0-90ohm) sending unit for the fuel gauge.
Easy install, and flawless operation for three years so far.
Cheers,
David

lnjstreetrods Dec 30th, 00, 09:30 PM Hi Dave,
Here is my 2 cents worth. I have used 3 or 4 Borg Warner, inline pumps this year and they work good. Just mount them close to the tank like any electric pump. I have the B/W part # but not at home with me.
Also you can add the return line to your existing tank unit, or have your local radiator shop solder one in for you. I think the tank unit out of a 71 Camaro (smog) cars have the factory return, and will fit the first gen cars. That part # is also at the shop in my note book.
I have done at least 6 Jaguar/ LT1's this year and the stock pump off the factory F.I. Jags works very well, as is.
BTW the B/W pump makes near 100 PSI.
If you want the part #'s email me. I changed to DSL today so my email has changed- lnjsndrs@swbell.net, (the first letter is a lower case L)
Thanks, Larry
