: Getting rid of collections

While I was walking through the Carlisle GM show, I noticed some NASCAR model kits for sale that made me think of some stuff I had in my basement that I really don't want anymore. When I pulled everything out to see what I could ebay, I found more junk than I realized, so I am looking for ideas on what any of you all have done with similar stuff.

I was a big Dale Earnhardt fan, so I have a lot of his stuff. I have the Wrangler #3 two car 1/24 scale model kit new in the box, and from what I saw at Carlisle and ebay, I should be able to sell this kit. I also have some built Goodwrench Chevys in the same scale, and a 1/16 radio control Goodwrench Lumina I played with and displayed. Then I have some of the 8x10 cards the teams give out at the tracks, some for six-time champion, some for seven-time champion. I also have one with about 60% of the team autographs from when I went to the RCR open house in 1994, but it was too hot to wait in the line for Dale or Richard's ink. I even have a couple of Kellogg's Corn Flakes bokes with Dale on them, including the 1994 version for championship #7. Some posters, other misc stuff.

Then my wife was a Rusty Wallace fan, so I have a bunch of his MGD cards and posters.

I also have a bunch of Davey Allison stuff, a new in box 1/24 Havoline car from the year he was killed, a 1993 edition 1/24 Racing Champions diescast, plus a bunch of 1/64 diecast including a Matchbox Screamin' Stocks car and a 1992 Daytona 500 winner three car RCI set (Davey first, with Sheperd 2nd and Geoff Bodine 3rd).

Then there is stuff that I just don't know what to do with. I subscibed to Winston Cup Scene newspaper for a bunch of years, and I have about three years worth in 1993-1996, plus the one when Dale finally won Daytona in 1998. Miscellaneous racing posters. Driver cards (most 8x10) for drivers that aren't racing anymore, like Buddy Baker (Crisco Car), Hermie Sadler, Brett Bodine, Geoff Bodine, Rick Mast, Lake Speed... all guys I generally liked, but stuff of limited value now unless there is some rabid fan somewhere...

And then there are about 2 dozen 1/64 Racing Champions cars from the same general timeframe (early 90s), like Mark Martin's 60 WinnDixie T-bird, Cale Yarborough's 66 Phillips Grand Prix, Elton Sawyer, Patty Moise, Shawna Robinson, Bobby and Terry Labonte, more Bodines.

So I guess what I was wondering here is does anyone know of someplace that might just buy a bunch of stuff without me having to do a bunch of individual auctions on ebay? My guess is I might have about $150 or $200 or so that I could get for some of the stuff. But then, what the heck do you do with the rest of the stuff? Throw away/recycle? Try to find some other NASCAR nut who wants to read newspapers from 15 years ago?

I used to like displaying the stuff in my apartment when I was at PSU, and even in a china cabinet for a while after I got married. But now it is just taking up space, and if I were to display some in my garage or basement, whatever I put out is just one more thing to clean.

The only things I really want to keep are the programs and tickets from the races I have been to, things like that.

I am sure plenty of TC folks have collected things that later down the road they decided not to keep anymore, so I just figured I would ask and see if anyone had any ideas.

Thanks!

Wow, I guess no one here has ever collected a bunch of stuff, then decided they didn't want it later. Hard to believe, but...

Hey Eric, I am sure everyone collected stuff. Then later on, you have to purge it. Try to sell what you can, things you don't REALLY want. I still have stuff in boxes that I will have to deal with sooner or later, but not enough time/energy to devote to cleaning it out. Luck

PS how's the car coming?

Hey Eric. I like you have a huge model car collection. Lots of Franklin Mint and Danbury. I also have hundreds of 1/18 stuff of muscle cars. I figure on a Franklin Mint car that I paid $150 for and have now taken out of the box and threw the box away I would be lucky to get $20 to $30 for the model for FM or Danbury. The 1/18 stuff I would think $5. a car. The car shows I go to with vendors are hurting and not selling much of anything. Research the rare- (I hate this word) stuff and see if you can get more but I'm guessing a few bucks per item.

At a swap meet a few months ago I bought a Burago 1994 Viper Brand new in the box for $5!!. I was amazed this was the first model car that I ever bought and threw the box away. Was cool to find one in the box. This guy was selling his models super fast. the guys with the higher priced stuff hauled it all home.

Either craigslist it or start hitting the swap meets.

Have a great weekend.

I have 2 daughters in college. They collected Beanie babies when they were little and I have a sheet load of them in my attic.

I've got a lot of Earnhardt stuff too. I'm the father of 1 daughter and 2 son's, so I bought most of it in threes. My oldest son says the stuff I have is my daughter's inheritance because he and his brother already have it. I've thought of selling it at times but not really ready to sell for pennies on the dollars or less. I have lots of 1/64 winner's circle stuff that I paid less than $5 a car for that might bring $5 in lots of ten (maybe).
For now it's in boxes in the basement.

I can't believe the spell checker doesn't recognize Earnhardt!

Eric:Now is not the time to sell. Sell when times are good and buy when times are bad. I doubt that you would get verry much for your memories. so, save them. Times will get better. Right now you will be just giving yor stuff away. I have over 200 1/18 die cast cars. still in boxes. most all are stock & super stock cars from the 60s, 70s and a few 80s. I was ( and still am) a big fan of "the Grump" Lee Shepard--Reher,Morrison and Warren Johnson.
Save your memories they will help you pass the time later in life. " why son i remember when that happed" LOL

I thought I was the only one with an attic space dedicated to "useless" collectibles...........beany babies, die-cast cars, coke stuff.......I think there is a "tickle me elmo" still in its box somewhere in there......

Every time I think about dumping it I remind myself of the stuff I found in grandpa's shed that he was obviously doing the same thing with, but now is worth a lot to collectors just because of the age and shape it is in.

I think I am going to make a "time-capsule" out of this stuff for my kids. Seal it up really well and forget what is in it, then they can at least have fun laughing when they open it.
