View Full Version : finally, first tuning session at the track w/406
68rs406 May 27th, 03, 11:24 PM lately i've been working a lot on my buddies heavy street nova, and have really had little time to take the camaro to the track. so finally, last weekend i got a chance to take it down for some tuning. i was both pleased and enlightened. the car runs flawless (knocking on wood) on the street, but at the track, the shortcomings of my fuel system were immediately obvious. so unfortunately, i'm planning out my new fuel system as we speak. my first pass it hooked killer, and pulled hard, up untill about 6k, and right as my power peak was checking in, my fuel system checked out, and it promptly nosed over. i short shifted into 2nd, and was rewarded  w/ the same results, as well as with drive. we tried some jet changes, and did pick up a tenth and a mile an hour, but it still fell flat on its ass at around 6k. overall, i was pleased, the motor ran great, and i knew i was pushing it w/my fuel pump at least, so it was no big surprise. one major plus is the caltracs. they work simply awesome. so well in fact, i'm now thinking about a gear change, from 3.73 to 4.11, and a shorter tire. even running on radials, i could leave as hard as i wanted, zero tire spin, and 1.66 sixty foot times graemlins/thumbsup.gif . my best time was an 11.93 at 112, with a 1.66 sixty foot. all my times were very close to this. i know it's got a lot more, considering how it layed down on the top of every shift, but not bad considering this was on radials, w/ power steering and power brakes, and shifting with the old horseshoe shifter (not for long though) it was fun spanking cars that "looked" much faster :D just thought i'd share, sorry so long winded. will post new times as soon as possible graemlins/beers.gif

Thats outstanding...
when I finish my 408 I wish to have the same success. My goal is to get around 11.90ET, running a 700R4. From what I have read on several post it would be a good idea to use a 1/2 line from tank to fuel pump with a Carter Fuel Pump (CRT-M4891) that should solve the nose dive up top. This Carter street pump flows 120 gph at 7.5-8 psi. That's double stock flow.
Eric68 May 28th, 03, 02:56 AM Very cool graemlins/thumbsup.gif What kind of radials are you running? Maybe I should get some for the street . . .
67RS502 May 28th, 03, 03:43 AM With a good fuel system and shifting higher, you could get some mid 11s with tuning!
Did you have any other traction devise on it before?
And how much "tweaking / adjusting" did you do to get the Caltracs to hook?
(I'm thinkin about getting a set)
Thanks
68rs406 May 28th, 03, 11:08 AM hey, thanks for the kudos guys graemlins/thumbsup.gif . i was pleased overall, but slightly irritated at myself for not listening to my buddies about the fuel system, oh well, lesson learned. DTL504, that was kinda of what i have heard about fuel supply as well, something along those lines would take care of my problem i'm sure. i'm trying to decide now whether i should go slightly overkill, since though i don't plan to run nitrous much, i built this motor with an occasional shot in mind, and don't want to do things twice. Eric, i re read my post and see i wasn't totally forthcoming with my tire description. they are actually 275/60-15 bfg drag radials. and really, to be honest i have never been a huge fan of them from using them in the past, they seem to be just a little better than a good street radial. but man, with the caltracs, these things just flat hooked! i tried different launch techniques, and the more i shocked the tires, the more they wanted. by the end of it all, i am seriously considering a set of 4.11's. and to answer your question 67rs502, unfortunately, i don't have any numbers with this motor before the caltracs, but i can tell you my poor little 350 that came with the car ran 13.80, and it was much harder to get hooked at all, before the caltracs. and as far as adjusting, i fully intended to do some tweaking with the bars at the track, but before i left home i set them as caltrac reccomends, 1/4 turn of preload, and didn't have to touch them again! i really can't say enough about them. i liked them on the street, although traction is still almost nil, but on the track these baby's really shine. thanks again for the comments guys graemlins/beers.gif
Tracy Focht May 28th, 03, 02:32 PM Awesome times....keep it up and mid 11's here you come.... smile.gif
68rs406 May 30th, 03, 12:28 AM thanks tracy, i feel fairly confident with my fuel system dialed in, mid 11's should be there. this motor was built for rpm's, and the current manifold i'm running (although not for much longer) is really a high rpm design. so it was really not performing up top anywhere near what it should. the manifold was next, now its fuel system, funny how that works  . now again this whole week we've been getting my buddy's nova ready for a big exhibition race this weekend in canada, so no time for the camaro. it's o.k. though, i dig working on a badass ride like this nova, it's a blast. looking to put a bit of nitrous to it this weekend and shoot for the 7's, woohoo graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Tracy Focht May 30th, 03, 04:35 AM Yea, funny how the 'gremlins' seem to run around the car and we always have to chase that 'weak link' down... :D
Yep, headed to the track tonight as well with some friends...one has a Chevelle that has a 565 BB and ran a 9.09 last weekend...shooting for 8's tonight...can't wait!
Have a safe weekend! graemlins/beers.gif
68rs406 May 30th, 03, 10:43 PM cool, let us know how you go and i'll do the same! have a fun and safe one as well graemlins/thumbsup.gif
68rs406 Jun 1st, 03, 10:52 PM well, back from the track this weekend with my buddy's heavy street nova, figure i'd just share the news here instead of a new topic. there were only about 8-10 cars there, it was an exhibition only deal for the harley drags. it was a blast! graemlins/thumbsup.gif . those harley guys are freakin' out of ther minds. they are full on nitro burnin' drag harleys, fastest pass was a 6.77 at 204  and we saw a fair share of high 6's. i made the comment to one of thier crew chiefs that i was curious how they fit on thier seats with balls that big! it was a very good weekend for us indeed, all the thrashing paid off. we're still tweeking this motor ever so gently, to try and get a feel for the cars potential. 1st pass we went out and ran an 8.70, motor only and running a safe fat tune up. next pass we started toying with the nitrous, (first time for this motor) and were rewarded with an 8.07 at 165. this was on a little 250 horse nitrous tune up, w/ quite a bit of timing taken out, and running pretty rich as well, better safe than sorry. next round we took 1 degree of retard out and lightened up on the fuel pressure slightly, and ran an 8.01 at 166, sooo close to 7's it was painful. that was the last pass on sat. that night we tinkered w/ the fuel pressure and retard a bit more, changed oil and checked things out, still on the same 250 horse tune up. first pass this morning, 9.20's, oops, forgot to turn on the nitrous bottle  . next pass, 7.87 at 170, w/ a 1.10 sixty foot time graemlins/thumbsup.gif , the track was unbelievably well prepped. it was a very good weekend indeed, and fun to boot graemlins/beers.gif . all those late nights were definately worth it. so the nova is now officially the fastest "heavy street" car in the pacific northwest, hell yeah. and this in an all steel bodied (except the hood) '70 nova. this motor definately has enough to make the chassis illegal (only legal to 7.50), considering the 250 horse shot is really nothing for it. o.k., sorry for the long winded reply, just thought i'd share. how about you tracy, you guys get into the 8's?
Snatchin'gears Jun 1st, 03, 11:31 PM May I suggest buying a parachute for the nova? It might like one of those rear deck gizmos for aerodynamics also.
I figure you'll be watching for blocks to make a set up like his. Good luck.
68rs406 Jun 2nd, 03, 09:10 PM the wing and "air brakes" are already on the nova, definately a must when pulling it down from 170+. no, i don't have the cash to play with a motor like that in my car. i'm satisfied with just wrenching on it. besides, it is almost (note i said almost) more fun toying with an 11 second ride like mine, very little work at the track, and i can take it out and drive it any time, which is a must for me. now his 632, that thing defines high maintenance, but its a blast. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
