Could somebody help clear me up on the differences in some of the MSD ignition boxes? I'm not really sure on the difference between the 6AL and the 7AL.
Is it primarily RPM?

The primary difference is the maximum energy output and maximum voltage output. It was built with high compression and exotic fuels in mind. The MSD 6AL was detuned for street and endurance usage.

It can also be a durability issue. The 7 isnt really meant for daily usage or for that point endurance. But honestly, I have run them in street cars for years without very many problems. I will add if you were considering the purchase of a 7, spend the money on a GOOD coil, not just something that will just do the job. I would recommend the 'Pro Power HVC' p/n 8251. If you were to have any problems, I believe it will be related to the coil itself.....the 7 is pretty much a solid unit.

One member of this site(84? Toyota w/ small block) had very decent improvments using the digital6 over the 6al.... just a suggestion.

If I'm not mistaking the Digital boxes have more options (controls) that allow for 2 or more rev controls and timing retard for starting and for NOS, etc. And usually the controls(on digital boxes) are dial in knobs vs moduals that have to be changed. Unless things have changed since the last time I looked.

I agree, I run a digital 7 programmable......tons of options. The digital 6 rock too.

I'm not sure I've seen a digital 6 or 7.
What are the differences?
And how does running one of these boxes affect how the advance is setup in the distributor?
