I am currently running a set of GM cast iron bowtie heads that were worked over by AFR about 12 years ago. 2.05/1.60, Felpro 1206 intake gasket, 68cc chambers on a 355 small block. Unfortunatly I don't have any flow or intake port numbers. These seem to be popular in the circle track ranks because of the cast iron rules but I'm still wondering about their capability compared to what's on the market today. Any ideas?

Carl,
What's the casting number? With the price of aluminum heads now, its hard to stick with cast iron, especially when their not original. Let me know the casting number and I can narrow down what head it is.

The Bow Tie heads are pretty good and haven't changed much over the years. I suspect your heads are just as good as anything being currently made, particularly with the additional work done by AFR.
However, there have been recent advancements in combustion chamber design that may make more recently designed heads more efficient. Remember though, theoretical efficiency doesn't always equate to more horsepower.
What's the matter? Getting a little antsy because you haven't changed anything lately? I know the feeling - I have been trying to justify a new set of heads myself.

I'll have to yank the valve cover to be sure but the GM Performance Parts lists the same p/n for both Phase 1 and Phase 2 heads, 10134392. Mine are Phase 1. Overall perfomance potential I believe is the same.
gheatly,
I have so much money burning a hole in my pocket I can hardly stand it. Seriously, if AFR 195's are only going to produce an extra 20 hp it would be crazy to swap. Without flow numbers or someone eles's experience it's a tough call.

Look for a number stamp on the heads from AFR. If you find it. call AFR amd they can compare them for you from their records.

I had the same thoughts, unfortunatly there are no stampings on the front of the heads. They must be in the back because I remember the AFR stamping. With A/C and power brakes I need a midget to get back there. Mirrors did little good. AFR did not have files listed by name going back far enough.

Steve,
Yeah yeah yeah. I'm trying to think of it as a married man's last gasp.
