Im looking for some info on what the old L78 camaros and novas ran for ET's. Im just want to compare the older cars with the low tech cam's and theories vs the new fast acting cams with the lower compression. I recently seen the article in one mag with an LS6 chevelle with BFG's pull a 13.35??, with a 4 speed and 4.10's. Does anyone know if this was a true stock car with stock ehxaust and all or was it stock appearing??
Im debating on going to a fast acting high power cam in my 70 nova vs the old LS6/L78 cam. The car is in pieces and it will be non origanal street driving car. Raced hopefully in the F.A.S.T seris once or twice.
Thanks, please add with the ET's if you remember the shift points you used or the rearend ratio the car had.
I love the old muscle and im trying to start up I site comparing peoples ET's vs old stock muscle cars. Lets see how far we really have come in technology.....

Last week at Martin there was a lot of Chevies running at the "Year One Musclecar Challange." Both a pure stock and stock appearing class were running in two classes. Dan Jensen in his LS-6 Chevelle with auto has run 12.16's with the GM cam. Jim Johnston has run 12.27 with a L78 Nova running the GM cam. My COPO cars had run 12.6 with the GM cam as well. These times are on F70-14 poly's through the manifolds. If your gunna run in the F.A.S.T class, I would suggest a different cam. I'm running the GM ZL-1 cam in my ZL-1 in pure stock and have only managed a 12.0 so far. You'll need more to be a threat!

Thanks pete, Im not looking to serious about the FAST seris but I would like to try it. Can you share any of the tricks to making those cars run so fast on polyglass? I mean lots of people cant even imagine running 12.6 on slicks let alone polyglass. Whats the secrets, what can I do to make this thing appear and sound stock so I dont embarass myself.
Pure stock is what type of a class? Can you explain the difference and the ET's saw where in what class.
Im looking for a class before they let you run they measure cam lift and duration and such. Im big into the factory stuff. I love the old big blocks that just have that mean growl to them.

You'll wanna run pure stock over stock appearing. Stock appearing is mostly around 500 inches and are running in the 11.50 range. Pure stock class , you will be in the games with a 12.3 to 12.40.
Start with the motor. Stock bore and stroke, run the GM cam. Very important you retard it 5 degrees to kill some bottom end and pick up top end. The retard is good for 2 tenths. Compression is everything. Run NHRA JE pistons for your application. The dome will be dead on. CC the heads and three angle valve job. No pocket porting or port matching required, as it is not allowed. Run at least 4:10 gears, and practise, practise, practise!
Go to www.v8buick.com (http://www.v8buick.com) and check out the "pure Stockers, and stock appearing section. They are just updateing the list of et's at the last event. Good luck.

Does anyone run a manual anymore or is it basically an automatic class? Is the racing heads up or is it bracket style? Is this just a local class or does it travel around? It sounds like just what I want to race in! Would you say that these cars are stock and fully street ready or are they basically a race car that uses stock parts? Thanks pete you are very helpful and I loved those tips!! I would have never thought of retarding the cam.

In the stock appearing class, two of the top cars are 4 speeds. In the pure stock side there are a few 4 speeds, but mostly auto's. A 69 396 Nova with a 4 speed ran 12.27 last week with the GM cam in it. The races are mostly in Michigan and Ohio. About 4 a year, but the one at Norwalk and Stanton the biggest to date. Year One is starting to hold there own events and sponsers them. You should come to Norwalk on June 15 and see what it's all about. You'll be impressed. 90% or better are just really nice musclecars and about 10% are really serious about this. Come and watch in a few weeks.

Thanks pete, Im from Fargo ND so thats quiet a trip for me. I'm going to call BIR which is in Brianerd MN and see if there are any races like that. I go to the muscleshoot out every year at BIR but its mostly race cars. I dont go hog wild about screwing up a great classic just to make it faster than its supposed to be. Thanks for all the help, I might send a couple emails if I can get my nova together. Thanks
