: Brake Lights Blowing a fuse
Milt's 68 SS/RS 396 Sep 23rd, 10, 12:49 PM Trying to get my car back on the road after getting it all back together. My latest challenge is the fuse keeps blowing on my brake lights. I don't really know where to look for a problem as this was not an issue before. I still have all of the original wiring. I did replace the brake vacumn booster, but really don't think that is the issue. I thought i would inspect the wires in the trunk looking for a short and then look at the wire at the switch. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
prostreet69camaro Sep 23rd, 10, 01:03 PM The rear harness plugs in at the trunk. Unplug the rear harness and see if it blows the fuse. That will tell you if its in the trunk harness or in the front harness. There is also a harness between the trunk and dash harness. Start unplugging harnesses till you narrow it down.
Milt's 68 SS/RS 396 Sep 23rd, 10, 01:14 PM Now that is a great Idea! Thanks :beers:
Nantooch Sep 23rd, 10, 01:21 PM You'll find the wires from the dash harness to the trunk harness located under the threshold plate next to the drivers seat. If it's pinched your short may be there.
Milt's 68 SS/RS 396 Sep 23rd, 10, 02:58 PM Could be as I had that plate off when I put in the new carpet.
crazyshopmonkey Sep 23rd, 10, 05:51 PM the 1968 camaro does not have an intermediate harness from the dash to trunk (that's 1969 camaro only) the trunk harness runs the full length and plugs to the dash harness behind the drivers kick panel (you might have to loosen the bolts to the E-brake and swing it out of the way) to remove the kick panel :beers:
Milt's 68 SS/RS 396 Sep 23rd, 10, 07:58 PM All Right guys I dug into this tonight. I did discover that their is no connection in the trunk. I inspected the wiring in the trunk & it all looks ok. I reinstalled a fuse & did the following test.
Brake lights only- all good
Left Turn signal - all good
Right turn signal - all good
Emergency flasher- Front signals on, Back signals nothing
Left turnsignal & Brake simultaneously - all good
Right turn Signal & Brake simultaneously- fuse blew
Don't know where to go from here. I'm going to look at the right wires in the back again, but this really has me scratching my head!
Milt's 68 SS/RS 396 Sep 24th, 10, 09:49 AM I looked at the right brake light wires & they looked good. What is wierd is it blows only when I push on the brake & have the right turn signal going.
flyingskibiker Sep 24th, 10, 09:57 PM Did you have the column appart, lately? The brake and turn lights share the same wires once they meet up at the turn switch.
yellow69RS Sep 25th, 10, 07:16 AM I'm puzzled too. Look at the wiring for the right front also. I don't understand how it can function with right turn or all brake lights alone but combined it shorts. Flyingskibiker is correct the T/S brake lites use same wire and bullb filaments in the rear.

Milt's 68 SS/RS 396 Sep 25th, 10, 08:31 AM I did put in a tilt column. Should I be looking at the wires coming out of the column?
Milt's 68 SS/RS 396 Sep 25th, 10, 08:44 AM I'm wondering if I should pull the wiring harness out of my old column & put it in the tilt? I'm thinking this may be the problem as I noted earlier the rear lights did not work with the flasher on. maybe I'm just trying to avoid taking off the kick panel again :). What do you guys think?
Milt's 68 SS/RS 396 Sep 25th, 10, 07:21 PM I may lose my mind.
I disconnected the column plug & plugged in my old column. Everything worked. I took apart the tilt column contact portion & cleaned every thing. I noticed a little brass pin about 1/32" in diameter & 1/4" long in the new one that wasn't in the old one. Took it out put it all back together. Now all turn signals work, brake lights work both work together, but my emergency flashers don't work! In the process of fiddling around with it apart I had them working for a moment. Right now I'm content to leave well enough alone, but this has been one frustrating long hot day in Vegas !
flyingskibiker Sep 25th, 10, 11:46 PM I believe the turn switch is different for the tilt and not-tilt columns. But the wiring and function should be the same. Anyway, sometimes if things are aligned just right (turn switch in column), the hazards and/or turn signals will act funny. You may want to try just presssing the hazzard button to one side or the other to see if they come alive. Don't get crazy though... Also, the hazzards use a separate flasher, fyi.
Milt's 68 SS/RS 396 Sep 26th, 10, 10:50 PM I'll try that. I knew about the separate flasher, maybe I switch that to to see if it makes a difference. I'm happy to not be blowing fuses and have the brake lights and turn signals work.
