Hello all,

I hope I put this in the right topic area. I recently trouble shot my brake light issues to the turn signal switch in the steering column. Low and behold it actually fixed the problem. Unfortunately, I wasn't really keen on remembering how the parts for the horn assembly went back into the column so I could use some help. Basically a schematic or preferably pictures of how to reassemble the parts from the switch/canceling cam up (towards the horn cap).

My thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Check out Jim Shea's Steering Papers:

F-body steering columns are all broken down for you. Look about 3/4's of the way down this page.

Thx HwyStarJoe,

I have that document and also another schematic I found online. Still not completely clear on some minor details. Do you think a Chilton's book on the 1967 Camaro would have the details? I have the original assembly manual for the car but it doesn't detail the horn assembly. Thanks very much for getting back to me...

There are a number of 1967-68 steering wheels and steering columns. Notice that the upper bearing spring is located differently between a standard (non-adjustable) column and a tilt column. I hope that one of these pictures will help.

All,

Thanks very much for all of the help with this. I fixed the problem yesterday and the horn is now perfectly functional. Took me about one minute to figure it out once I had the schematics. Thanks again.

Now back to the original problem that started all of this. My brake lights stopped working and I finally got it down to the turn signal switch which fixed the problem. However, I am having issues with some of the rear lights being dimmer than the others in certain conditions (e.g. Turn Signal on and applying the brakes, or lights on and a turn signal on). Any ideas what might be causing this.

Thanks again,

Pete

Been going through the same thing, are your emergency flashers working?

Hi Milt,

Well after a month of troubleshooting this thing, I should be the expert by now... :-)

To answer your question, my flasher knob is missing so I never did check the hazards (ordered a new one as we speak). However, I finally fixed all of the other problems last night. Bottom line is it turned out to be the turn signal switch in the steering column that was bad (BTW, no fun putting in a new one). During the troubleshooting, I ended up putting in a new brake switch, new bulbs (1157's), new light sockets and finally the turn signal switch. I had the dim lights situation as described above and it was as simple as making sure the sockets were seated (grounded) correctly that solved the problem.

Let me know if that helps at all. If not, drop a note and I'll try to help as much as I can...

Glad it worked out for you. I have everything working but the emergency flashers. I think it is in the switch. Did you replace the part of the switch that has the wires going down the column. If so How?

Yes I did and it's a bear... Here's the part I replaced...

First of all, pay very close attention to how you disassemble the column. You may even want to take digital pictures as you go (that was my mistake). I'm going by memory so please bear with me... Also See attachment.

1. Remove the horn cap.
2. Remove the 3 screws that hold in the plastic bushing and cup.
3. Remove the Spring Plate and plastic ring (note orientation).
4. Remove Center Screw and Steering Wheel (may need to rent a wheel puller but I just yanked mine off).
5. You will reach a point where there are 4 screws. DO NOT REMOVE THEM.
6. Unscrew the direction arm and remove. Also the flasher button.
7. The housing for the turn signal switch is cam locked into position. If you just loosened the screws you should be able to turn it a quarter turn counter clockwise and remove it.
8. You will still need to pull the center bearing assembly which the signal switch screws into.
9. You will need to remove plastic covers and a large bracket that supports the steering column (Do not let the column hang, support it with something)
10. You'll also see two metal clips that hold the wiring in place down the column shaft.
11. The curved portion of the new switch mates under the dash. The mating part is clipped on under the dash so fish around and get that connected and replaced first.
12. Then the rest is obvious. Remove the old switch, replace with new, backtrack to reassemble the column.

Easy huh? :-)

There's supposedly an easier method but I didn't want to risk it.

1. The bearing assembly that holds the switch is a drag to get off. The bearing is swaged on and replacing it takes someone with more talent than me (I cheated and used a friend).
2. Remove all of the pins and wires from the lower connector (TAKE PICTURES, NOTE WHICH COLOR GOES WHERE).
3. Cut off the old switch wires. Connect something (string or thin hanger) to the wire bundle and pull it up through the column.
4. Attach the new wire bundle to the string and pull it down through the column.
5. Reconnect the pins and off you go.

Let me know how it goes for you. Hope this was of some help.

That's what i figured you were talking about. I contemplated switching out the one from my old column. & I had the same idea of attaching a wire to the wires as you pulled it out. I think I'm going to save this project for another day. I need to get my horn working & temp gauge working then find a way for this beast to pass smog. What a hassle!

Milt,

I feel your pain. Thankfully 1967 and older cars don't need to pass emission in Utah so I don't have that cross to bear. Best of luck.

All,

HELP!!!! Apparently I didn't fix my problems, they are just starting to compound. Last night everything was working fine (I thought) and I took it in for safety this morning and all hell broke loose. Here are my new problems.

1. Brake lights, turn signals work fine when the lights are off.
2. Turn on the lights and the rear lights stay bright and steady. No turn signals in the rear. Turn signals indicate in the front and the instrument panel.
3. I just noticed that my interior lights are on all the time now.

I'm starting to get really frustrated. I am know thinking it might have something to do with the headlight switch. Any ideas?

Thanks as always for all of the help.

Man that sounds like a ground problem, or it could be in the light switch.
By the way I went ahead & bought the switch. Was curious if yours is a tilt column. Also what part of Utah are you in. I have family in Cedar, Santaquin & Provo. My son in Cedar wants me to bring the Camaro up for some shows. Thinking about it.

Ya, I was thinking it is the light switch as well. Oh well, more stuff to buy. And I HATE chasing electrons... :-)

We're in Sandy, UT. Moved here from LA and fell in love with it (believe it or not). We have some great car shows hhere. The best one in my opinion is Peach Days up in Brigham City but that was already held this year.

BTW, the interior lights being on all the time problem went away magically. I'm definitely thinking it's the switch.

Let me know how it goes with your turn signal switch...

Cheers

I got the switch in & it actually was a breeze. I have turn signals & brakes still no emergency flashers. Also installed anew horn relay & got my horns working again for the first time in 15 years:hurray:. Tomorrow I'm going to tackle the Heat gauge & maybe install a new flasher for the the emergency circuit. I was thinking about your light switch & as I recall when i was installing the new hoses for my hide-aways on the light switch, while I had it out I cleaned all of the contacts that i could with a small wire wheel on my dremel. Thing worked great after that.
Hey Utah, lets see a picture of your car:yes:

Takes one to know one!
I guess GM knew the SS/RS Camaros were the best, as they put one in the very first Camaro commercial. They wanted to put there best product forward, although I don't know about that Butternut Yellow.....:D
