View Full Version : 500-600hp springs?
Crono303 Nov 23rd, 02, 09:11 PM okay i got a 67 and its going to be puting out from 500 to 600hp and weighting in at about 3100lbs. looking for a street driven animal, meaning HANDLING AND DRAG. i was contempelating on the global west coil-over set up, but just realized that it is NOT a pure coil-over!!!! so waste of time there. event though, maybe just a upper tube arm would help alittle i still haven't found anyone with any experinces of them. going to keep the front as-is but definitly going koni adjustables all around. springs are a ? mark. oh and the sound of the delrin(detroit speed) or delirum(global west) are going to be a must also. the rear will be mini-tubed so alot of reseacher must be done on combonations, detroit is most definitly pulling me there diriction. was looking into coil-covers with 4link but seems to be alot of $$$$. i think personally the leafs, with the right set will do just fine. ohh yaaaa solid body mounts obivously, but it seems like summit got some for cheap ones and detroit and global got some expencive ones, coments on that?
any coments on the set up will help alot?
derictly on the springs, front and rear.
thanks Rome
68sixspeed Nov 24th, 02, 07:01 AM I'm using 500# coil-overs, with a small block, decent setup, 450#'s were too light, couldn't get ride height. -Dan
davidpozzi Nov 24th, 02, 01:57 PM You don't want a "true" coil-over shock setup unless you build new upper shock mounts. The stock shock mounts were never intended to hold up the whole car. The lower A arm has a lot of leverage over the shock which doubles the load the shock and it's mounts carry.

Crono303 Nov 24th, 02, 05:24 PM 68: well my motor is not going to weight as much as the small block.
So David ur saying that the coil-over setup that QA1 provids will not be so great with out the conversion detroit speed is offering.
68sixspeed Nov 25th, 02, 05:24 AM If you look at qa-1's setup, it is not a true coil-over, but it does give you the adjustability of one. The spring is tapered to use the coilover shock's lower perch for height adjustment and the stock camaro's upper spring seat, so the car is properly supported.
Years back I had bought the 'superior spindles' kit, which used a true coil-over, but suported it by the upper shock mount, it didn't hold up and bent, like Dave mentioned. Then I got creative and made my own, but this was before the DSE kit was available.

68rs406 Nov 25th, 02, 07:41 PM i have been looking into the qa1 coil over conversion set up, since i first saw it, and was wondering if it worked pretty good or if it was just another gadget. they are a pretty cool looking item, seems like the adjustability would be nice, even on a drag oriented car like mine. anybody using them? just curious.
68sixspeed Nov 26th, 02, 04:38 AM I'd be curious to hear results on the QA1's also- we are planning on putting them in a 442 pro-touring car currently being built, but likely won't get that far until spring-- just got the frame back from powder coat. -Dan
Crono303 Nov 26th, 02, 08:11 PM i get what ur saying how the upper shock mount isn't made for a coil over setup. now i understand y there is a conversion to be done before intalling the coilovers. detroit and speed's conversion costs a arm and leg just for some metal pieces. there is even a crazier idea i just had. the japanenes suspension system has came out with a double spring coilover setup, were one spring is made for sensitivity and the other for handling. the only reason y i dont want to intall the coilover setup is because of the fact that the suspension right now, which is stock doesn't have alot of spring travel. i got the info from david's page.
