: rear exit exhaust??

Are any of you running an exhaust system that terminates at the front of the rear end. Does this set up add exhaust fumes to the interior of the car? Would turn downs help? I am thinking about the full system from Spintech and it appears to stop before the rear axle.

In some states it is not legal to dump the exhaust before the axle, if driven on the street.

Turndowns are definately recommended if you were to exit the exhaust at the axle. Infact, a few of the guys had this discussion a while back and it was agreed upon, that turning the 'turndowns' towards each other would quiet the exhaust system down even more (theory of phase cancellation). The main reason for using turndown's is to eliminate possible reversion into the exhaust system itself.

As for fumes, I guess it depends on how well the rear half of the car is sealed off from the outside elements. I would say it's gonna be a 50/50 answer. I have been in cars that were not effected by it and some that did have an increase of fumes into the interior.

Good question. Lets see what the boys have to add.........

I have dumps on my camaro and my friends just end after the mufflers. Niether of them really have a problem with fumes even sitting still. Although mine sure stirs up a lot of dust on dirt roads or even in parking lots that are not perfectly clean that gets realy annoying if the windows are down and thier is a breeze. Tail panel of car is always dirty beacuse of this. I do think it changes how loud it is in the car. My friends car without the dumps and regular 40 Series flowmasters is just about as loud inside as my car with delta Flow 50 series flowmasters. His are 2.5in and mine are 3in though Either way you could always add or remove them, its not that tough or expensive.

My turn-downs are right after the rear axle and they point to the path of the rear tires.
I have no problem with fumes, but it does kick up some dust when in a gravel parking lot or road like YELLOW68SS said. I like the looks of the turn-downs better than straight out the back.

I used to have turn downs on mine and I can't remember if I had fumes in the car or not....uh....what were we talking about?

BPOS, Too funny :D

I had Thrush header mufflers with short straight pipes on the back that ended before the rear axle. I did not notice much in the way of fumes but that is subjective in some ways. These cars all give off fumes even with a full exhaust.

The car would rumble through the 'hood and you could hear it coming from some distance away with that setup. Not crazy loud but more like ground pounding subwoofer stereo systems the kids all like to have today. ;) I guess kids are not at all like we were back in the day. graemlins/clonk.gif

Heck guy's put the ends in the stock, right behind the tires, locations b/c you are only talking about like what 3.5 maybe 4.0 feet of pipe!! If that much.

I have true 2.5" in that postion now and have no hassles at all except just too much noise in general.. And my exhaust used my stock hangers so doesn't rattle at all.

I did however have to oval my tips like stock to keep them from hitting my springs.. No biggie at all...

I say all this b/c I have found that the longer the pipes and the further back you can get the tips, the quieter everything will end up... Plus no "John Law" hassles at all...
