: Roller Cams
69CamaroSS Mar 6th, 02, 05:16 PM Ok,
I'm playing with DD and the rollers are looking better all the time - especially the XER264 which maintains 10-15ftlbs over the other cams through 3500, even with them till 5500, where it starts to pull away again. Anybody have any experience with this cam?
I'd like to have some lope to the cam and something that kicks butt on the street but can run in the high 12's also. Here's a couple cams that I'm comparing it to.
Magnum 270 Hydraulic Roller
428hp@5500 452ftlb@4000 419@2000
Xtreme Energy Roller 270
436hp@5500 452ftlb@4000 413@2000
Xtreme Energy Roller 264
434hp@5500 455ftlb@4000 429@2000
Any other suggestions?

onovakind67 Mar 6th, 02, 06:58 PM I've got a 280HR in my Nova, it works great. Plenty of torque, runs well until 6000 or so. The Comp # is 12-430-8.

Ever run that nova on a dyno? Hell-of-a lot of torque by the looks of it. How does it idle? Any lope to it?
onovakind67 Mar 7th, 02, 06:57 PM It's not a very lopey cam, only 224° @ .050 with 110 LSA. It has 14" of vacuum at 700 rpm, and the small exhaust system helps to smooth the idle. I get asked a lot about the horsepower and torque, but I really don't know. With a 700R4, you get into a lot of low rpm driving, and this engine runs very well at 12-1400 rpm. DD2000 likes the 280HR cam, if you believe the results this engine has about 476 ft# at 2000 rpm, with a peak of 515 ft# @ 4000 rpm, 475 hp @ 5500. I got interested in this cam after seeing the dyno sheets at AFR in their 'Hydra-rev' section. By some strange coincidence, there was one on eBay shortly after that, a full kit; the cam, lifters, pushrods, springs, retainers, locks, button and full roller rockers that I snagged for less than $600.
There used to be a chassis dyno here in Fairfield, but they closed.
CamaroNOTcamero Mar 8th, 02, 11:26 AM nice, thats the cam that my brother wants to use in the stroker he's building.
I told him it'll idle real low and pretty quite but he'll be able to do john force burn outs http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
69CamaroSS Mar 8th, 02, 02:29 PM Onovakind67,
What does that kit go for new and do you have the part number for the kit? I haven't been able to find a roller kit at Jegs or Summit.
I guess with the rollers, you aren't going to get that lope sound that I'm looking for. Still, with all that torque, it's going to be hard to resist!

joesmith69 Mar 8th, 02, 03:01 PM You can still get a great lope with a roller cam. But, a 224* cam no matter flat, roller, hydra, or solid, just isn't gonna be real nasty sounding. Step up to a 235-240* cam and now your gonna get that lope, and with a roller plenty of power throughout the rev range.

I've got the same cam and Comp said anything with more duration won't make enough vacuum for power brakes... Just something to add to the equation.

I can't find a part number for the kit, but the total for the parts came to about $1100 at Summit.

69CamaroSS Mar 9th, 02, 08:29 AM OUCH! Didn't think it took that much cash to play the roller game!
CamaroNOTcamero Mar 9th, 02, 01:06 PM they're pricey, thats why i decided on a solid flat tappet for my camaro. but my brother's set on the roller deal, so we're gonna give it a shot in his vette.

There are cheaper ways to go. Included in my parts was a set of $300 rocker arms and the $84 valve springs. You can buy cheaper springs for .550 lift roller cams, you can get cheaper pushrods, but you're still looking at $700 or so.
69CamaroSS Mar 9th, 02, 03:33 PM Ok, that makes me feel a bit better. I've got TrickFlow heads with new Roller Rockers, guide plates and chrome moly push rods. I need to put a kit together that includes cam, roller lifters, springs and timing chain.

CamaroNOTcamero Mar 9th, 02, 03:56 PM you need different pushrods for roller lifters if i'm not mistaken, so add that on there.
