Went to the track last night hoping for a good night after finally dipping into the 12's earlier this year. But my car didn't want to run the numbers. Back in April my car ran the best ever, a 12.96 at 104.5 mph with a 1.91 60 ft time. Last night it had the best 60 ft ever a1.825 but my mph fell to only 101mph and I only ran a 13.16. I don't understand how my 60 ft could be better but then I run slower. I don't think the air was that bad to run 3 moh slower. The only thing I have done to the car between the two times I ran was go from only an electric fan to reinstalling my black plastic flexfan. I know there is some drag on the fan but enough for 3 mph? The car ran 103-104 last year with this same setup. What gives?

How was the weather in April compared to now? Probably a little cooler? Any wind? The fan does make a difference. Was your timing set the same? Did you shift at the same rpm's? The better 60' time probably reflects better track conditions.

Weather makes a huge difference. Up here in PA at Maple Grove Raceway, it gets extremely humid. It is not uncommon for faster cars to lose a couple of mphs. Actually my Mopar buddy goes to the track every year in April when it first opens and never can match those times teh rest of the year. Even when it cools down here the air is still thick enough to cut with a knife. Last time I ran at teh track I ran 104 mph. Only ran 13.40's. You give me hope of getting into the 12's on the motor. Once I get that traction thing worked out. Racing gets expensive. . .

Super Chevy or Chevy High Performance last year did a Fan Shootout and the difference between my fan and no fan was about 43 horsepower difference on there smallblock. The problem I have is, this is the same setup I used last year before I even put the electric fan on and took the flex fan off and I ran 103 to 104 mph last year. The air was obviously better in April then last night. Is it true that a better 60 ft time will slow the mph down a little? Its just frustrating going backwards in tuning when it was running great earlier. I told everybody the car runs 12's then they only see a best of 13.16 last night. But like I said my 60 ft's are better so somthing is working out ok.

Flex fans are EVIL!!!!!
There are some good ones that don't waste too much HP, but there are some that can soak up 25-30 HP !!!! There was a dyno test in one of the mags several years ago that showed an electric using near 0 HP, a stock thermostatic clutch fan using about 12HP and a flex fan that used like 28 HP. Numbers are from the archives of my brain and could be off a little, but no kiddin' them flex fans use up some HP.

Ask Joe G about flex fans. I doubt his engine ever saw 5500 RPM. Find some sort of electric that will fit. (the mark V111 Lincoln will definately do the job and is cheap)
