Sounds like an interesting idea, do you have the specs on this cam you are wanting to put in the 302?

I did back in '71. In the '68 that i had back then. I liked it (no more valve adjustments!).

I wonder if it pulls to 6500 in a 283 or 302.......

Back in the day some 40 years ago, little cams like this , Blue Racer, Honest Charley, Saturday night specials and the Duntov 097, to name a few, were the only hot cams used in these small 265, 283, 292, 301 motors. They were run with stock rockers , power pack, double hump heads, and stock over counter springs , Yep, they hit 6500 and more . If Paul or Harley would chim in, they would tell you a story or two.

Check this out. Some old articles from Super Chevy. They built a few solid and hydraulic small block engines as close as they could get them to factory specs and dynoed them.

To summarize:

L79 327
Peak torque 381 @3900, 350+ from below 3000-5100
Peak hp 345 @5400, 333 @6000
HP was only off about 10 from the solid lifter 327 with a much bigger cam

DZ302
Peak torque 332 @4300, 300+ from 3400-6100
Peak hp 356 @6500, 352 @7000

It would be nice to see how they ran against each other with the same equipment. Good stuff...

In the magazine articles, the L79, L76, and DZ302 engines are all essentially the same except for the cams. Same 11:1 compression, almost identical heads, very similar intakes, and the same 750 double pumper.

This verifies the 327/350 would run to 6000 rpm for show but it was done dealing long before it got to 6000

It may be done, but shifting around 5700-5800 would be ideal I think. Pretty impressive to make 345HP at only 5400.
