Joe,

Are you a youngster? New to this?

The Torker is a very poor intake choice, out of date, dual plane better Performer
The 305 is pretty much a horrible choice for a performance build, even if free.

When you say race....are you talking 1/4 drags or showing off to your buddies at the burger joint? Please list what you are trying to do EXACTLY...be realistic. Lots of bargains available and I can assist....

You seldom see 305 and racing in the same sentence

Hey Joe - you are going to run into a lot of attitudes like George's, sorry he's not really showing the real Team Camaro spirit... The 305 has a stigma and if you are building from scratch I'd tell you also to start with a 350... The deal is a lot of guys end up with 305's because that is what came in the car they have and starting from scratch isn't in the budget... You'll find a lot of articles (not just magazine) out there if you search and there are guys making power with warmed over 305's so if that's what you have go for it!

Here's a start... http://www.popularhotrodding.com/enginemasters/articles/chevrolet/0667_phrs_305_chevy_engine_blocks/index.html

Guys used to build 6 cylinders as thats all they had.

305 not being the "one" to build, they still can make OK power. There are stroker kits out there for them too :)
Being a basically stock motor from '79 is going to be a low compression (8.4:1 & 130hp ?) motor and not take real well to a "hot cam".
Getting your heads shaved some or new heads with a smaller cc chamber to up the compression would be a good idea. Then again, if you have the $$$$ even a GM Target Master replacement would be a big step at 250+. Even a shortblock 350 and your heads, intake, and such would be good.

Something to think about....don't just throw $$$ at it,spend it right

Be careful with heads as a decent set of heads with larger valves will hit the cylinder walls on a 305. Full disclosure my 85 IROC Z has the stock 305TPI at 220hp

My dad bought an 84 3/4 Chevy PU with a 305. Cam was flat around 80k. I put a CC 440 lift 260 duration. It never ran like that before! It ended up going over 200k and got better mileage than before........ It would really turn on when you gassed it. He loved it.
