I have a 68 with a Muncie M21 4 speed, the tranny seems to make excessive whining noise in 1st and 2nd gear, not so noticable in 3rd and 4th. Is this normal or is a problem on the way.

My M20 is really loud too. I have had it rebuilt and the tech said at some point in it's life it was run low on fluid and the gears wore a little. He said it was still comletely functional, but that is why it's loud. Have you checked the level of the lube. It should be just to the base of the inspection plug. Does this sound right guys? John

j,
See if you can find someone else close to you with an M21 that you can compare. Muncies were all a bit noisy in the lower gears and guys who are used to the newer cars that are all "silentized' for the yuppies think that something is wrong. Without hearing it it is hard to say if it is normal or not. My 73 has quite a bit of whine in 1st and 2nd and has been that way since new.

Mine whines in third more than anything else.. I think it's just the way it is.. as far as I know, all muncies whine a little.

hey, i can hardly hear my stereo in the car with an automatic and 3.73 gears and I love it! If you really want to deaden some noise, you can put some dynomat sound deadener under the carpet, I have heard that it works pretty well. You can also affix some of it to the back of the rear seat.
