Is it possible to have a dz302 without the oil gallery plug above the timing chain cover?
It's a 3932386 casting.
All the engines I have seen with this casting number are fairly decent hp, so I figured all of them were Flint blocks.

No. All DZ 302's were built at the Flint plant and had the plug.

Hope this isn't a dumb question but, did all 302 replacement short blocks (CE) have the plug? My CE does and it was dated 70 or 71 (would have to look again).

My CE replacement has the plug but no DZ stamps as this was a fitted block( block, pistons and rings)

I have read somewhere (IIRC it was a GM service information publishing :o ) that Flint supplied the L-6's and SBC V-8's and Towanda supplied the BBC service assemblies.
That follows my observations for the engines back then.
These serice units were supplied to the dealers as "fitted" block (pistons, rings & bearings supplied w/block) or a "partial assembly" (crank, rods, pistons, cam/timing gear assembled in block)
NO complete engines were supplied for warranty adjustment purposes at that time.
The original engines Intake/carb, sheet metal and other parts were transfered to the serice block and returned to the customers vehicle.
I personally know of one vehicle (vette) that recieved three (3) warranty engine assemblies - the owner was advised by the zone rep. that the next attempt to have the engine warranted would result in examination by GM engineers to find why it failed and NOT be covered if it was due to owner abuse. It never happened again ... as far as I knew ;)

I had two CE replacements, guess 3 is the limit. Oh, I was the warranty clerk too, :o
Yep, knew zone rep by first name.

Just to throw a spanner in the works, yes, it's possible.
Very limited time window that it happened. Send me a pic of the pad stamping....
