View Full Version : loss of oil pressure!
67FREAK Jul 10th, 02, 03:49 PM here is my problem, while cruising at over 3300 rpm for several miles i noticed a drop in oil pressure from my normal 50-55 down to 20 and the needle was bouncing (as if running out of oil) i can cruise at 2800 rpm all day long without a problem. i have a fresh 377, less than 300 miles, comp mechanical cam, moroso 6 qt pan, moroso oil return screen kit installed, moroso oil restrictors installed. my question, do you think the oil return screens slow down the return of oil too much? it just acts like it is pumping the pan dry faster than the oil can return, but that is why i installed the restrictors. i am thinking of pulling the intake and removing the screens. any suggestions? mls48341 Jul 10th, 02, 05:35 PM Are you using a hi-volume or worse hi-pressure oil pump?About all I can think of
is changing that or adding more sump capacity.Change the oil and filter and see if
anything changes.

jhow66 Jul 10th, 02, 06:49 PM Good way to check is to stop and check oil level when it does this. Then wait a few minutes and see if level comes back up. If it does--slow oil drain back.
stingr69 Jul 11th, 02, 02:44 AM If the pickup is mounted too high, this will happen. Did you verify the distance between the pickup and the bottom of the pan?
I would start with running an extra quart or 2 over full and see if this has any effect.

Milan Jul 11th, 02, 04:11 AM I dont understand. You installed restrictors to redirect oil return. I would think that would make the prob worse. The screens should pose no oil restriction.

Milan Jul 11th, 02, 06:38 AM I have a suggestion. When it starts to act up, pull over, run the engine at the RPM to duplicate problem.while it is acting up have a friend pull out the dipstick and record the level. Then drop back to idle and record level. and take to cruise again and record level before problem acts up. It may be good for some helpful info. good luck, hope it stays simple for you.

67FREAK Jul 11th, 02, 05:24 PM milan, the restrictors are designed to reduce the amount of oil to the top end on solid lifter applications, stinger69, yes i have about 1/4" gap at the pickup. when it does this, i can slip it into nuetral for or short ways, then bring it back up and oil pressure is good again. I am almost sure it is running out of oil. i had the exact same setup in my 355 (oil pan and pump) except no return screens and a hydraulic cam, never had this problem. i think i'll pull the screens out and try it.
