: Convertible Top Pump
imbucky Dec 27th, 10, 12:23 PM Hey Guys!
I'm wondering what is the best option for my convert pump. I think it's toast and it stopped working.
Should I get something like this rebuilt or buy a reconditioned one somewhere like Ebay?
Thanks Guys! :beers:
gm torch red Dec 27th, 10, 02:36 PM I rebuilt mine and it was very easy and the rebuild kit was cheap. I would at least take it apart and see what it looks like.
imbucky Dec 27th, 10, 05:57 PM Where did you get the kit?
gm torch red Dec 29th, 10, 05:12 AM Ricks first gen. but other parts houses should have them.
JeffsSS Dec 29th, 10, 07:16 PM It really depends on what is wrong with it. Does it just not run or not push fluid? The rebuild kits only give you the rubber O rings and seals not the brushes. It is also a royal pain in the *** to change the brushes and takes a lot of patience. I did both on mine. The seals are easy. Why do you think the pump is toast?
gm torch red Dec 30th, 10, 02:03 PM I replaced my brushes with no problem. I had the armature turned while I had it out. Really easy.
wagonman Dec 30th, 10, 08:00 PM Brushes should be an easy task with some patience.....I have done these as a teenager so it’s been a while.
You can clean the commentator with a scotch bright if it’s not too grooved or worn. I think I may have devised a way to retain the brushes with wire during assembly. I don’t remember if I had to drill holes for this.
But what is the problem with the motor/pump anyhow?
imbucky Jan 1st, 11, 09:46 AM The motor just stopped working and didn't have any fluid problems, I think the motor is just bad?
I took it out and put power to it and still nothing....

There's an over-temp switch in the back by the brushes. I'll bet the contact is dirty or needs to be tightened-up a bit.

There is ??????
I know of a relay in the driver side kick panel.
I didnt know of the formentioned overtemp switch.
imbucky Jan 8th, 11, 08:06 AM Well, Think I found it?
The pump has always worked good and the motor ran slower and slower all the time until it stopped (of course with the top almost down!) and it locked up.
So it's the motor and not the pump.
Now what? I found one on Ebay for $150. Should I just buy that and replace it or have it rebuilt? Or is there a place to send the core and get a rebuild from there?

Hmmm....
From that description verify that a good 12 volts is being supplied at the pump.
If so.....
Then check the brushes and commentator.......
Or.......Buy a new pump.

There is. It doesn't look like much. Just a set of contacts. But one of them is bimetallic and opens if it get too hot in there. It's inside the motor, back by the brushes.

The motor and the pump are connected. Another common problem is the rear bearing. It can get dry and seize to the armature. Sounds like that might be your problem. If you want to send it to me, I'll look at it for free.
The aftermarket ones are Chinese universal fit units.

I sent my pump to a place called Topmotorrepair.com. Just wired it up and tried it tonight and it worked great. it was $135.00 to have it rebuilt with return shipping. It took about 2 weeks seems like all new parts includes mounting bumpers and resv plug. I just stumbled across the website while searching for a pump. Hope this help $100.00 cheaper than a repop.

Ok, I don't want to offend anyone's intelligence, but you do realize that the little plug with two wires in it is NOT a hot and a ground. Its a common mistake, but the pump is grounded by a wire to the body. The little two wire plug gets power on one of them for up, and the other one for down. Just making sure we're all on the same page.

That is a very good point that gets overlooked when trying to troubleshoot over the net!
