I'm trying to figure out if you're kidding - but just in case your not;
??? Soooo, why would someone want a 'loose' VIN
Oh, I know ... to create a BOGUS vehicle to rip someone off
And not only is it 'not right' - it is Illegal in all states ;)
al8apexer Dec 28th, 10, 10:05 AM see? some people think it is ok

It is illegal to remove a VIN plate from a vehicle and put it on another car. They can build a plain jane 6cyl to the specs of the trim tag and it could be worth more. Especially if it is a z or big block etc. Also could swap the tags onto a stolen car.

Rick, you have "11" instead of "N" above. It should be 124379N544003. And you also have ST 99 when it should be ST 69. Minor issues, but if someone is looking for this info later on with a search, they won't find it. You might want to edit the post.

Jonesy Dec 28th, 10, 11:27 AM I have added it to my database with the pic and info. I track these. Have been for quite a while.
When seeing these on ebay, it is very important to record the VIN and body number plus tag info here in the post. This stuff can be searchable down the road. If you report it to ebay and they take the ad down, the info is lost forever and of no use to us here.

Excellent point!
Since the OP had included the info (which I didn't even proof-read as Ed did :o ) I made a copy for my files, but didn't do a 'future search' post.
For future search:
VIN 124379N544003
Cowl;
ST 69 12437 NOR 209227
TR 712 52 B
12B X11
(note: added the 'B' for roof color)
And a few others made file inputs also ;)

Thanks ED for the heads up on this one; with my poor eye site trying to decifer the numbers I miss represented the "N" as an "11" by the time I got around to it my edit option was defunct. Not really a valid excuse as I should have known better just reading the information.
Thanks for the fix Vintage 68.
Rick

al8apexer Dec 30th, 10, 02:23 PM it would probably be a good idea to track the seller / location too, they may try to slip them into another sale
Satatic Dec 30th, 10, 03:15 PM Illegal is sugar coating it. It is a felony.
RichSchmidt Dec 30th, 10, 04:35 PM At least he could have spiffied them up. That VIN looks like it was torn out with a pair of bolt cutters. Whenever this stuff happenes, whoever sees it should print up a copy of the listing right away. Once it is pulled down we loose all the other info. I would be great to be able to show the listins, then investigate the seller and some of the other people he is doing business with.
bwcamaro68 Dec 30th, 10, 04:44 PM Its a shame they are even able to list it on ebay. Does no one at ebay check these ads? I know they pull the guy selling his kidney or worse a kid?
why not auto theft?
RichSchmidt Dec 30th, 10, 04:58 PM They pull it if they catch it,but they dont really look at car parts. Pretty much the only thing that will raise a red flag for them would be if the actual title of the add said "VIN TAG FOR SALE" Other then that, they dont know much about what is being sold in their auctions. With about 5000 listings per second going on they cant check any of them. They rely on guys like us to drop a dime.
And lets face it,they arent experts either. If I listed a car on there right now with a picture of the dash VIN and a picture of the hidden VIN and they didnt match, the "experts" at Ebay wwould have no way of knowing what they were looking at. Same goes for bogus trim tags, restamped engines ect. Millions of dollars per year in fraud takes place in Ebay and other internet auctions every year.
RichSchmidt Dec 30th, 10, 05:04 PM Should Ebay be responsible to police the listings of ALL the cars they sell? Should they only sell cars that meet a certain criteria? How about guys who sell just the firewall of a rare car as a whole car? It techically has all the body numbers on that single chunk of car,but should somebody step up to the plate and say that it isnt really a car anymore? How about totatlly rotted out shells that were run over with bulldozers? I guess you could fix such a car,but shouldnt somebody step in and remove and destroy the tag because it would seem obvious that such a car would cost more to fix then it's worth? Who is the expert? How much metal can you cut off a car before it is just the tags? If this guy cut off just the firewall of the car from the dashpad area to under the brake booster and from the middle of the car and left, would having 2 square feet of original car left with the tag mean it is still a real car? What defines a real car in this hobby?
Kurt S Jan 1st, 11, 10:56 PM Gotta list the right VIN though.... :)
124379N564003
Anyone note the seller?
Jonesy Jan 2nd, 11, 08:11 AM Took a look at the VIN plate, it is 124379N564003
DOUG G Jan 2nd, 11, 01:17 PM These should be reported to the local police of the state they're for sale in with copies and links in e-mail or phone call. It IS ILLEGAL to remove a VIN from a vehicle.
If these sellers just get their add pulled Vs. the State Troopers knocking on their door they'll keep doing it.
Thank You.
Think about it..... your car gets stolen.....theif sells to someone for half what its worth and the guy "thinks" he got a deal. Whoops no title....no problem. Buy one off ebay, install it, and it's all OK  :noway:
You're out a car (hope you had insurance and enough of it) Now the Ins.Co. is out $$$$ and rates go up. Vicious cycle

Actually, the zip code on the IN title was 47630, Newburgh, IN, near Evansville. It was issued back in June 83, so who knows if the title was in the seller's name....
Title # 468487P.
