While poking around ebay yesterday and wasting time,
graemlins/boring.gif I came across a Steel SBC crankshaft for sell at a very good price.
The seller has an informative site
with apparently good composition information.

Anyone care to comment on the 5140 import crankshafts. Ya all think these would be a good buy for a High Performance SBC?

The issue I have heard about the import cranks relates to the quality (i.e., purity) of the metal. Of course this could just be domestic manufacturers taking a swipe at foreign competition. Doesn't SCAT import most of their lower end stuff?

There's several different metals used to make cranks.

Regular lo-po Gray-iron, but not many.

Ductile or nodular iron make good stock cast cranks.

Scat and others sell cast steel cranks which in the Scat 9000 series is like a cast version of a high alloy steel crank.

forged steel cranks on like 1018, 5140 and finally either 4130 or 4340 or something like that.

And finally,

Billet or totally machined cranks out of an 8000 series stock if I recal right?

Please go over to Scat's site and read what they have to say. I've posted info on this before but my memory is about as long as my left hand index finger b/c I don't use the info very often..
