Hi, I have not posted in a while, but I have a car that I bought in 1994, I originally started asking the guy to sell it to me in 1983-84, It was sitting in a Garage in Detroit from 1978 thru 1990 then moved to a warehouse near I-94 and St. Jean in Detroit, till 1994 when I bought it. It was stored with convertible top down with a dead flat rat in the folded top, yuck, interior out cause of rats and mice, so I did not find any paper work, build sheet in the seats, didnt look in seatbacks, back seat had nothing or the fronts, nothing on top of the gas tank either. I know it is all original because I am the only person who ever took this car apart (as it is still apart) it still had all its original paint, it is a very early 1968 model and even had 67 mirrors from the factory, some experts say that just did not happen, but I know they used much of their 67 parts and components on 68 model cars, my car is a 08E built car, 5th week of August 1967, paint Turq w/ black nose band and flat black rear tail panel (big block SS cars only I believe) and white convertible top, interior, deluxe turq, pwr windows, wood grain control panel escution plate, pwr top, power front disc brakes (4 piston) power steering, tic tock tack, console gauges, horse shoe shifter, tilt steering wheel, fold down rear seat, am-fm stereo, front rt fender antenna, super Sport package with the 396-325 hp ( MY ) 400 Turbo-Hydromatic transmission. Who can document my car and authenticate it for registry? and if there is anyone out there that can tell me approximately how many 68 Camaro convert SS 396 with my options were built? I'd really like a ballpark please. I am 3rd owner, nearly impossile to get any info from guy I bought it from, he just dont think its worth his time, he bought it from a GM executive (probably a dealer hot shot ) from Merrolis Chevrolet in what was known as East Detroit, now known as Eastpoint, on Gratiot ave between 8 mile rd and 9 mile rd, maybe some readers from MI might know of a sales person from 1968 at that dealer ?? dont know his name either, all I know is the big wig from the dealer or GM tech center in Warren, bought it for his wife to drive, it scared the hell out of her she said so they sold it and she wanted a Mustang so he bought her a Mustang and he sold the Camaro to the guy I bought it fro in Detroit, I live here and know all these surrounding areas so if anyone has any info I appreciate it very much. All I have done to the car was install new floors and new rear GM NOS Quarter panels and have aquired many parts NOS GM. thanks Tim

Tim, contact Jerry MacNeish at CAMARO HI-PERFORMANCE (http://www.z28camaro.com/consvcs.html). He can authenticate the car for you.

In the meantime, if you could email me your contact information and pictures of the VIN, Trim Tag, Engine Pad, etc... I'd appreicate it. I'd like to add your car to the database. My contact info is in my signature below.

Tim,

The 68 Camaro SS is difficult to document without original paperwork. You appear to have the correct drivetrain which is a huge plus.

I guess it depends on what you want done as far as authenticating the car. The main things would be to document the originality of the drivetrain. There are several people on this board that can tell you if they are genuine or not. That might be a good starting point.

Post pics of the engine stamp with partial VIN, transmission information and the rear axle information.

It sounds like you probably know where all the codes are...but if not...here are some links...

http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml#PadStamps
http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml#trans
http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml#axle

There were 10,773 total L35 Camaros in 1968 (coupes and convertibles) but I don't think the number of L35 convertibles only is known. A rough guess would be 15-25 percent of the total, but that is just a guess.

Jerry would be a very good choice if you want to have someone come to your location, but he does charge a reasonable fee.

The problem with using statistical analysis is that it is purely mathematical. as an example, if there were 10,000 396/325, and the percentage of each of the options was as follows: (I'm guessing, because I'm too lazy to look these up, and I'm just trying to show the fallacy in using statistical analysis)
Convt: 20%
Delux int. 30%
Auto:60%
Turquoise: 10%
Power Windows: 5%
Tilt: 20%
Fold down: 5%
AM-FM:20%
Rear antenna 10%

So mathematically you car would be 1 of 10,000x.2x.3x.6x.1x.5x.2x.5X.2x.1=.04 ......or essentially 1 of none!

While a curiosity, the actual number built has little to do with value, although a highly optioned car is more desirable than a bare bones one (everything else being equal.

Suffice to say you have one of the most optioned 68 convt out there....only major option missing is A/C.

As for documenting, Jerry McNeish would be a good choice.

Sounds like you may have to make a little reward offer to get that previous owner off his duff and looking for any existing documents. Hard to imagine any GM big wheel going out and buying a Ford back then. Probably had to hide it in the garage.

Pics, yes. I agree.

Did we find out if the drivetrain is original?
