can i directly bolt in a new 540 big block chevy engine in a 1967 camaro stock?

Yes, no, maybe, there are lots of variables such as; power steering, headers, trans crossmember, power brakes, tall valve covers, heater box, transmission, clutch linkage, motor mounts, etc. The bottom line is -- the General did not do it that way. Do a search on this site, there has been lots of discussion on this topic.

If your '67 is a stock 396 BB car and if the 540 engine is a standard low-deck block 4.5" bore x 4.25" stroke one then you won't have any problems at all putting the big engine in it's nest because the block outside is the same as a 396!! IMHO. pdq67

PS., My 496 is just a B&S'ed 454.
