I love the sound and tone of Flowmasters but the two chambers are just too loud. Does anyone have any experience with the three chanber?

I had the 2 chamber 3" system, which I sold recently because of the noise. I have a good friend with 2.5" 3-chambers on his 383, and it's only a gnats hair quieter than my old 2 chamber system. If you don't want to draw undo attention, stay away from them. I loved the sound of mine, but they attracted too much attention from Jonny law. It gets tiresome having them tail you and watching you all of the time, especially if you like to put your foot into it once in a while.

I replaced my Flowmasters with a 2.5" Dynomax system, and I love it. It purrs like a pussy cat in town, you can still hear the angry lope of my 292H cam without waking up every cop in a 2 mile radius. When I really get on it, it has that nasty, crazy, high horsepower sound. In my opinion, I'm getting the best of both worlds. I can drive around town with out setting off car alarms, but when I want people to hear it, all I have to do is rap the throttle a couple times to let them know. I don't dislike the Flowmasters, but I did hate the interior resonance. You might consider the new Delta Flow series, I hear they are more mild. For the dollar though, I'd buy my Dynomax Super Turbos all over again in a heart beat.

Crash,

He's right- the Flowmasters are louder than necessary. After hearing his Dynomax mufflers, I am seriously considering replacing mine.

Shawn, could you provide us with Dynomax model numbers and an approximate price for two? Thanks.

When you have the reasonance problems are the mufflers exiting under the car or,out the back?

Mine are the regular Dynomax Super Turbos, 2.5". Offset inlet, center outlet. The interior resonance is an artifact of the Flowmasters, whether they exit underneath the car or out the back. I've heard that the Delta Flows knock down the interior resonance better than the normal Flowmasters, but I haven't heard them personally. They Dynomax mufflers kill the resonance, but still sound great when you get on the throttle. The other nice thing is that I can hear subtle things from the engine now, before all I could hear was massive cavitation and horrible interior resonance. I could have blown a hole in a piston before and not know it because the interior noise was so bad. But now I hear the things I should hear, and I still get the nice cam lope and exhaust note.

As I said before, I do like the 2 and 3 chamber Flowmasters, just not for a street car. Personal preference I guess... eh? http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

I agree my flowmaster system is too loud the cops hate it!!! Does anyone know where I can get a quieter muffler that has the dual in/out like my flowmaster so I can just replace it.

The dynomax muffler that Shawn is refering to is a part #17733 2.50 offset/ center. I own a muffler shop and have sold both Flowmaster and Dynomax for years. I agree that Flowmasters are to loud but the Dynomax are not quite as free flowing. If you are looking for good noise control as well as unbridled flow I suggest a muffler called Xcelerator. Straight through design gives great performance gains with a throaty note and an all welded, aluminized construction with a lifetime warranty are hard to beat. I have them on my 94 C1500, 99 Suburban, 56 Big Block Belair and 68 Cutlass convertible.
If you cant find them in your area, drop me a line as I will gladly ship.

My First 69,

Believe me, you DO NOT want the interior noise everyone is talking about here.

I have two chamber flowmasters as well. Last year, a friend of mine and I went on the Hot Rod Power Tour. We drove 6 hours a day for five days straight in my car. Every night out ears were ringing from the exhaust noise and our voices were hoarse from having to yell at each other to talk.

I am definitely going to change the mufflers before this year's Tour.

LOL Interior noise http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif I had a '67 Landcruiser w/ 350, NOS, fenderwell headers, cam, manifold, etc., 2 chamber 2.5 Flowmasters, No rubber mat, bare metal floor. These exited out the side, ahead of the rear tire. The muffler shop tucked them up as tight as he could to the floorpan, for added ground clearance. Not much air circulated around the mufflers. Needless to say, it would roast your thonged feet in the summertime, warm in winter. Loud? You bet. Resonance? Too much. I have had the "no voice" from yelling over them on long trips, and the ringing ears also. I'm glad that all of you are sharing this info., as it is making me re-think about what I will choose for the 427 in the '68. The Cruiser is long gone, but the Flowmaster memory is still fresh. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

Forgot to mention in my post above.

I talked to a Flowmaster rep on the Tour (they were a major sponsor) and he said I needed to add an "H" pipe. So, if any of you also are not running a "H" pipe, it is supposed to help.

Hello all,

I have a 67 Camaro with a 350, semi-lopey CompCam, headers, 2.5" duals with H-pipe, and flowmaster 2 chamber DELTA FLOW mufflers with tailpipes exiting in the stock locations behind the rear wheels between the leaf springs and the quarters. I absolutely love this exhaust system and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. I have no interior resonance whatsoever with the windows up or down, but have a mean, lopey exhaust sound at idle and a nascar-sounding wide open throttle note. I have had this exhaust system on my car for two years now. I drive my car everyday (it is my only vehicle) and have never once been pulled over by a cop. I also like to romp it and have never attracted attention from the blue lights (and South Carolina cops are notorious for having NO tolerance for loud cars). I have a friend that has a 94 Cobra with that evil blue oval on the trunk lid that has flowmaster non-delta flow 2 chambers. I can't stand to ride in the car. Not so much because it is a Mustang, but because it's so damn loud you can't stand it. It resonates so bad inside with the windows down even that you can't stand to ride in it for more than 15 minutes if you value your sense of hearing. Evidently the delta flows really improved the 2 chamber mufflers. My car has more power than his, has a lopey cam, and a big carb, and is drastically less obnoxious and even sounds cooler without his interior resonance. Like I said before, I wouldn't trade my exhaust for anything. If you want to ask me about this at all, feel free to email me at jrt67ss350@hotmail.com Also check out my car at www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Street/5440 (http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Street/5440)

Just got off the phone with a local speed shop and he said the same thing. The Flowmasters with the Delta Flow system have much lower levels of reasonance but still have the great tone. Think I just might try a pair after all. Heard a Nova the other day with them and was it SWEET!!
