im building a motor for my 1980 z28 i have a good 327 core i also have cheap accses to 350s im building on a budget, this car will be driven semi-daily and may see occ.long trips what motor combo would you guys suggest? also what rear ratio, its a 350hydro i have plans of adding a 700r4 later,i plan on changing rears when i add the 700.i really want the most bang for my buck,id like it to be a real street thumper, how much power can i make with the 327?im also thinking of adding nitrous in the future.

the more inches the more power if your on a budget.pocket port the heads and have a good 3 angle valve job done including back cutting the valves.(vortech heads are VERY good for a budget). add a xe262 or if you must xe268,the 262 will give you better torque for budget heads. install it at 106 degrees centerline. have the block decked to zero. use flat top pistons or D-dish pistons.magnum roller tipped rockers(1.6 on the intake).use a weiand 8004 intake(or stock, people don't realize the stock quadrajet intake makes more power up to 3500-4000 rpm over aftermarket intakes.). have the distributer professionaly recurved.run coated 1 5/8 headers.and a GOOD cold air intake system, not just an open element.put a form of x-over pipe in the exghaust. all this could make a healthy 350-375 h.p. and be very torquey.

Not to dispute your knowledge, but sometimes more inches doesn't necessarily equate more power. The little 327 has a shorter stroke, equating to quicker revs, and higher revs, and is equal to, in my opinion, if not better than the 350, for all around road and strip prformance. The 350 is definitely capable of more low end torque, but the 327, with it's snappiness, as well as high-rev capabilities, has been more fun in my book. They're all great, though!!!

I "built" an engine in Desktop Dyno, then changed only the displacement from 327 to 350, to 383 to 400.
Guess which one had the most power AND torque?
The larger engine could be cammed even bigger than the "test" and provide even more power and torque than the "test" engine.
I don't have it handy to refer to. I have a new computer and don't have Desktop Dyno back working on it yet.

I would guess the 327 gives up 25 hp and 25 ft lbs of torque depending on how big a cam is used.
When you are crusing along, and jump on it, the smaller engine will have to rev up more before producing power, the larger engine will jump out faster. If they have similar equipment and trans, etc.

deppending on the year of the 327(68-69) you can put a 350 or 400 crank into it. or if you like the quick reving capabilities of the 327 go with that, but theres no replacement for displacement!
and just for the hell of it ,if the 327 and 350 are built using the same parts(specs) besides stroke, the 350 WILL make more power ALL through the RPM range. now if PEAK h.p. is trying to be acheived(above 7000 RPM) then the shorter stroke will have an advantage because of the less friction being produced.but it will have to be reved(spelling) higher to acheive out put over the 350.

This has little to do with anything but down the road I think you're gonna be getting some flack about a 1980 car with a mill that went away in 1969...
