Hey guys im new here and wanted some advice on building a 427.Ill do my best to gice as much info as i can.Its a 68 427 block, cast crank,2 bolt mains.Ive heard 2 bolt and a cast crank can be better if running under 600 horse. The rods will be stock with forged 10.5 pistons.I'm thinking of going with the XE 284 .574/.578.The heads will either be 840s or comparable aluminums.full roller rockers, hei distributer, performer rpm air gap with a 850 double pumper.Hooker super comps with 2 chamber flowmasters.I will run a richmond 5 speed with a 3.42 12 bolt in a 1969 camaro. What kind of power can i expect from this setup?Any better ideas?I would like 2 be in the high 11s and 550 horses, but i dont think this setup will get me there.

what kind of tires will you be running and is the rear suspension have any kind of traction bars? i have a 67 with 3.73 in the rear good for cruizing and decent for the track. remember if you cant hook the tires horsepower is useless...... graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I don't think you can get 11's but 12's are definetly in your future. That high $$ trans isn't really capable of power ranges that could put you in the 11's. It should be a nice street terror.

The car will have the 3.31 gears due to the low geared trans.Ill have a mini tub with hoosier quick time drags 295/50/15s and cal trac traction bars.My10secss thanks for the words I think your right that 12s are more like it.Got any ideas how to get in the 11s?Maybe a built manuel th400?Oh and yes a street terror it will be graemlins/thumbsup.gif

n.o.s. 125 shot would put you in the 11 s but its tough to use with a stick. th 400 is a good consistant way to go but a stick is more fun on the street. dont forget 11.99 and you need a roll bar.

Your engine combination seems to work well, I would recommend some ARP rod bolts and balance the lower end. I am running about the same setup. Traction will probably be a problem. Some good "sticky" tires and Cal tracs should help.

Traction will be the biggest problem. It doesn't take a lot of BB to get into the 11s if you can put it all to the ground.

Just my opinion. I would probably go with an Ultradyne cam similiar to what you have but a tick more aggressive on the lift. I like the early closed chamber heads with some mild port work and big valves (2.19/1.88). A well built T350 with 3.42/3.73 rear gear, 3000 rpm stall convertor and drag radials would be my choice and forget the mini-tub. In a 3500# car this should be an easy 12.30 or better tire shredder. Add a good 6 point rollbar and a 150 shot of juice and run 11.50's for sure.

Mathmatically,, a car with a hp to weight ratio of 7 lbs to each 1hp is good for upper 11s. (look at 2002 z06 vettes - 405motor and 3250lbs w/driver - thats closer to 8 to 1)

http://www.mrccfl.com/quartermile.html
http://www.angelfire.com/fl/procrastination/quarter.html (blasted popups)

Common formula is (weight * .00426)3*trapspeed mph

Your combination is closer to about 500 hp.
The ebrock aluminum head and a similar cam produced about 530 on a 462 motor. Get the best head you can and then call ultradyne or cammotion for a cam. See what they recomend.. if its not that far lift wise from the comp.. the hp will be similar.

Should be capable of mid 11s really with suspension work.

I remember seeing a 69 chevelle with a L88 427 and a comp cam that would run very low 12s and that was 15years ago. The guy got 11s out of it by just changing to a newer cam. A LS6 454 chevelle was in the 11.8s I think and 10.8s with a nos shot. ... and that was almost 8years ago.

Work on suspension as much as you do motor.

PS, how much does your average impala weigh.. ?? 4000lbs?

Best e.t.: 12.35 @ 112 mph

I'm building a similar setup...

427 steel crank, 4 bolt, full roller (306/318^, .632" lift), edelbrock aluminum oval port heads, H beam rods, and 10:1 J&E forged.

I have a Richmond 5 gear, with a 3.08 12 bolt posi rear.

You could easilly get some more cam with your compression / manual trans.

I was gonna run a Tremec gear, and run 3.55's, but got such a deal on a used / rebuilt Richmond 5 that i decided to change my setup to the 3.08.

I LOVE 427 revabillity

John

Heres my 427 combo

427 4 bolt
6223 1053 forged crank
GMPP 7/16 4340 rods
TRW pistons 10.6 CR
GMPP Roval heads 2.25 / 1.88
XE 284 cam
Weiand Team G
dominator 750 rewoked to 850

4 Speed ( auto gear muncie ) dual friction clutch
3.89 ford 9 inch

To be honest it has enough power to do just about anything needed on the street. It turns 11.23 in a 3000 lb car and turns 10s all day with a 125 HP shot all on drag radials

I think with that combination and good traction, you should be in the 11s. It is very close to what I started with I had 10.5 srp, edlebrock oval port heads, 284 cam, rpm intake, 2"inch headers and a muncie 4 speed with 410 gears. I did not know how to set the rear end up good enough to get the car to hook out of the hole. That combination ran 116 mph at low 12s.

Good luck

Thank you everybody!Thats more feedback then I thought I would get.Any other idea's for traction?Or more opinions on the 427 are welcome. Thanks

Best traction thing I have EVER done (besides slicks) . . . move the battery to the trunk. (yes, I finally did it and it makes a huge difference).

Also, I found the absolute most stealthy way to mount the NHRA mandated safety cut off too - can send pics by email if anyone is interested.

Nothing definate but I've seen some tall slicks make low times with small block engines. Getting the leafs and axle to not move around helps greatly to start and keep the transfer of power. My guess is a loose rear is like cutting half your initial application of power. No matter what don't be disappointed with your results. And even more so don't sell that 427 it's a keeper. Unless you want to sell it to me graemlins/thumbsup.gif

That combo should hit easy 11's, a 383 built like that will. I don't see why a 427 won't. As long as you launch at a reasonable rpm, it should do fine.
