: Exhaust Recommendation
LarryC5 Jul 31st, 03, 05:05 AM It is time to finish off the exhaust system for my 69 Camaro. I need recommendations on which mufflers to use and what size exhaust pipe diameter is best suited. The engine is a 630hp 502 using a set of modified 2" tube diameter Hooker Super Comp headers.
The system needs to support the HP and torque but not become a magnet for the local sheriff.
To keep it simple I will run the exhaust system out to the rear axle only.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

DOUG G Jul 31st, 03, 05:41 AM 3" torque tech, w/ turndowns... if its quite you loosing horsepower, if its loud you get the "blue light" special.

67RS502 Jul 31st, 03, 06:10 AM Why not the Torque Tech 3 1/2" system? that would be enough for 630hp!
Also run a X-pipe, that will make a difference. Borla or Magnaflow mufflers.
Be sure to let us know what it runs graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Eric68 Jul 31st, 03, 06:40 AM If you can get tail pipes installed that will make it quieter without sacrificing any significant HP. X-pipes / H pipes help with the noise and build power too.
On a smaller scale we used 2-1/2" mandrell bent flowmaster pipes (includes H-pipe) with Dynomax Ultraflow mufflers on a small block car. The car only went .05 secs faster with open headers.
Its a fairly quiet system but only 2-1/2" pipe, I wonder if you could build something very similar with 3" pipe for your 502.
camcojb Jul 31st, 03, 07:13 AM I ran a 3" Torque Tech system on my ProCharged big block and that made over 800 rwhp, so size-wise 3" will support your power well. I had a 3.5" on there at one time but it was noticeably louder inside the car with the same style system and mufflers.

LarryC5 Aug 1st, 03, 05:40 PM Hi All,
Thanks for the input. Where do you purchase Torque Tech products at? I'm hoping Summit Racing has this manufacturer as I will be in Reno for HAN next week and will make my semi-annual visit to their retail store.

I hate to be impartial, LOL, but I put a Borla Exhast on my mill about 2 months ago.
Man the sound is like.......
(Wake me up.. I'm still dreaming about it)
Um... Borla = expensive, but you cannot beat the sound!!!
I luv mine!
3" exhaust is mandatory for your application...
chicane67 Aug 5th, 03, 04:46 PM With 502's, I have always run the same diameter tubing as what the collector diameter is to the muffler and then either same diameter out of the muffler or 3".
Dynomax 'UltraFlo's or Borlas would be my choice.
CamaroNOTcamero Aug 5th, 03, 05:08 PM Tom knows,
Dynomax ultraflo are a quiet, but excellent flowing muffler.

good exhaust article
LarryC5 Aug 11th, 03, 04:51 AM Another question.
Given the inlet/outlet locations for the various muffler choices, which inlet location is best, center or offset? 3" is the diamter of tubing I will run....Again, the car is a 69 Camaro.
Thanks,
Larry
camcojb Aug 11th, 03, 05:00 AM Larry,
I've done four exhaust systems on 69's and the offset inlet, center outlet seemed to fit the best. I was using the Torque Tech piping which is set-up for that type of muffler. They run the inlet pipes down the middle of the car next to the driveshaft so you need the offset at the inlet to hook them up.

67RS502 Aug 11th, 03, 05:21 AM On most of the chambered mufflers you'll want to run a cent/cent.
But on straight thru muffs like a Borlas, you can run offset/offset, because
the core will run diagonally from offset end to offset end, not impeding flow.
Since your exhaust is on the small size, go with a X-pipe and good flowing
mufflers like Borlas or Ultraflows, the X-pipe will give more volume for the
pulses, and the good mufflers wont add any backpressure. ;)
Good luck on it.
LarryC5 Aug 11th, 03, 06:05 AM You guy's are quick!!!!! Thanks again for the support. It appears that I now have enough information to get the exhaust requirement taken care of.
This has been really helpful.........
