I have a 69 camaro with a hurst shifter in it and while trying to install a center console realized the shifter lever hits the console. I figured, no big deal, I will just pull the shift lever out and buy one that fits. My problems is, I don't see how to get the lever out. It is not bolted on with 2 bolts, but rather inserted into a rectangular receptacle of sorts and somehow locks in. The question is, how do I get it out????
thanks

Is the shifter the original for your car? Sounds like it might be. They came with an integral lever that must be removed with the shift mechanism that bolts to the tranny. It's a hassel. If it's the original shifter and the consol is a '69 you should be able to get the consol on by placing the lever in 4th gear.
Hope this helps,
John

John, the car was originally an automatic and was converted to a 4 speed by the prior owner. The console fits but not with the shift plate installed. I was hoping to just change the shift lever to the correct shape for a 69, so I could install the shift plate as well and clean up the appearance of the interior. So you are not aware of any method to remove the lever alone?
thanks

Dean, If it's an original type handle, slip two feeler gauges down either side of handle. There are little tabs on the shifter that fit into indentations on the handle. The feeler gauges have to push the tab back (about a 1/2 down, but go past it). Then pull on handle. If the handle is rusted on, you may have to pull real hard http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif. Spray some WD-40 first. Kevin
