View Full Version : Help with cam
CamaroJSU Feb 28th, 03, 06:01 AM OK here is the deal, im going to build a 400 sometime in the future. Its on a stand now. But for now until i can get in the car i want to give my 327 little more pep. It a 327 thats .30 over with double hump heads 202 160 valves and have been shaved down some. I to buy a new intake (performer air gap) and a cam. I think i have it down to the Xtreme comp cams 262 or the 268. Just want to know if the 268 is to much for the 327. thanks for the help, going today or saturday to get it. My birtday is next week, present for myself.
Eric68 Feb 28th, 03, 07:34 AM The 268 would be nice IMO, just keep in mind that you need to get the right springs and check retainer to guide clearance when putting it all together. You should be OK, although rockers studs and guideplates would be nice if you don't already have them.
Happy Birthday!
CamaroJSU Feb 28th, 03, 07:38 AM Thanks for the info. The heard are on the car now and i didnt want to go into them. thanks again smile.gif
boodlefoof Feb 28th, 03, 07:52 AM How high you plan on winding it? I think the 262 would be a good choice for daily duties, but if you plan on getting on the gas then the 268 would also be a good choice.
My 355 has the XE274, but it is a weekend cruiser only.
Eric68 Feb 28th, 03, 01:38 PM You do not have to remove heads to install springs, just valve covers. Once you do the first one or two they are EASY to replace as long as nothing gets in the way. You will have to remove the heads though if you drop a valve because of a broken spring.
RickB1B Feb 28th, 03, 03:51 PM I have a 67 w/ 327. I've got the Crane 266, it's a great street cam. The Comp 268 is about the same cam. Highly recommend either.
pdq67 Feb 28th, 03, 07:01 PM RickB1B is right on the money! A 266 is about 210 and the 268 is about 218 so both work VERY good in a 327!! Imho... pdq67
PS., and don't sell the little -097 solid lifter Duntov cam short b/c it runs REAL GOOD in the little motor!! It was stock in the 340hp and 360 hp/327 motors!!
fujimook Mar 1st, 03, 12:27 AM Have a set up similar to what you are talking about; balanced 327, 30 over, TRW small dome, milled 461's with 3 angle valve job, Comp Cams ex 262, Performer RPM, Holley Spreadbore dp, headers & 4 speed. Pulls real well in 1st & 2nd but seems to run out of steam above 5500 RPM's. Was told by the guy that did my heads I would not have to worry about screw in studs or guide plates... 2 years later no problems. If you want to wind it out a little more go with the ex268 or ???.

pdq67 Mar 1st, 03, 03:18 AM From fujimook, if you want to wind her out, go with a modern Ultradyne Cams solid lifter cam. UDHarold has a couple on his cam page at the TOP!!
These two should REALLY work great in a little street running 327!!! And should go up above 7000rpm ,easy!!! The little old -097 Duntov will do the same thing, but I do have to admit it is an old grind!!! BUT it STILL RUNS REAL GOOD in the little motors!!! Jmho... pdq67
And I think a 327 at 7000rpm is a FUN motor!!!
stingr69 Mar 1st, 03, 03:57 AM Ahh! 327's! ...RPM's!....Cams!...Double Humps!
I just love "old school" threads in the morning! graemlins/beers.gif You guys are gettin me hot!

CamaroJSU Mar 1st, 03, 05:32 AM Thanks guys for the help. I went and got the comp 268. I have not gotten the intake yet, i think i might go today. I also wanted to know if a set of comp roller tiped rockers would help. the place where i got the cam has them on sell for just little over 100 bucks. lol i guess im getting excited over the 327 and i building a 400 in the near future. lol smile.gif
Ackattack Mar 1st, 03, 07:05 AM I have the HE268 cam in my truck now (327). I like it quite a bit. I did have the XE268 in it before (wore a lobe off) and it was a little to aggressive for the stock converter in a heavy truck with 3.08 gears. The XE268 probably made a little more power up top, but the added driveability and low end torque increase of the HE268 made it a better choice for my pickup.
Eric68 Mar 1st, 03, 08:13 AM The Comp roller tips are worth a few HP over stock because the ratio is accurate and 1.52:1. Stock stamped steel rockers vary when measured; I've heard they run anywhere from 1.30 to 1.45:1.
I'd stick with a dual plane intake with the XE268, like the Performer RPM or RPM Air Gap if you want a couple extra HP and the good looks.
