Last night I hooked up my timing light, tach and vacuum gauge and ran a test. I disconnected vac from manifold to distributor and hooked to gage. I started off at 700 RPM and read 15 degrees initial. Vac gage read 12.5 in Hg. Increased RPM and noticed that mech advance started at 1100 rpm where it read 17 degrees. It increased to 28 degrees at 1500 rpm. Small jumps of 2 degrees at 2000, 2500, 3000 and at 3500 it maxed at 35 degrees. Vac gage read 22 in Hg. When I reconnected the manifold vac to cannister it read 53 degrees total. Any comments?

That sounds normal to me. Remember, vac advance is not part of your "total timing" picture - that is why you always should disconnect it when setting your timing.

Basically, your mechanical advance is adding 20*, and your vac is adding 18*. 18* might be a bit much, but if you don't hear any pinging at cruise I wouldn't worry about it.

Those are the exact same numbers as my Fast Burn 385, except with the FB heads, I start at 12* intitial for a total of 32* I put a limit stop on my vac can so that it only adds 12* more at cruise because I was getting pinging. I run my vac advance on full manifold vac (not ported) and have been very happy with that.
