View Full Version : cold air intake for carbs? miker61588 Feb 7th, 05, 04:01 PM i have an 85 trans am with 350 and holley 750dp. does someone make a cold air for this setup? i really dont like the open air cleaner element under the hood. thanks jackalope Feb 7th, 05, 04:15 PM cowl hood...... georgia 69 Feb 7th, 05, 04:17 PM I have seen a cold air for carbs so to speak. It uses an open air type element but enclosed like a factory breather and 2 inlets coming off of it going to the front of the car.I dont think its really called a cold air system though. miker61588 Feb 7th, 05, 04:54 PM thats the kit im thinking of... but i cant recall what its called or who it made by, or even where to find it. dylanjans Feb 7th, 05, 05:44 PM Is it the ram air box at www.ramairbox.com (http://www.ramairbox.com) ? JimM Feb 7th, 05, 06:40 PM I think that's the one. They always have a 2x2 ad in the back of the car mags, it kinda looks like the ones on early 442's, with the scoops under the bumper aonghus Feb 7th, 05, 06:53 PM eric68 has one, mebbe ask him for his $0.02? novaderrik Feb 7th, 05, 10:02 PM some mid 80's Camaros had a dual snorkel air cleaner with air scoops on top of the radiator support to bring cold air to the engine. Silver69Camaro Feb 7th, 05, 10:16 PM I've got one on my Camaro, it works well. It's all about the cold air. It's worth about a tenth after jetting. If you don't jet up or down, you may see a loss of power or no change. My truck also has one too. BUT, it works a little too well. During the winter (like right now), ice develops around the carb and it wont idle well. Once the ice melts, the idle cleans up. Usually happens after about 30-45 minutes of freeway driving at 30* or so. Eric68 Feb 8th, 05, 03:17 AM Here is a pic of mine. It is the Ram Air Box by Air Inlet Systems with my own 4" aluminum inlets tubes. I just painted my box with touch up paint, wet sanded, rubbed it out and polished it so it matches the car body. It is functional too -- the car does go faster with the system. http://hobbystage.net/camaro/eric_68/1097274081-004699.jpg DOUG G Feb 8th, 05, 11:34 AM Eric, that does look good. Now where does it pick up air from? core support or behind the air dam? Silver69Camaro Feb 8th, 05, 04:35 PM On the '69s, you can get the air from between the headlight and the grille side without having to put holes in your core support. It works well because the grill acts as a nice, radiused inlet. gwarren Feb 8th, 05, 06:04 PM I have a ram air box from them that I am no longer using if anyone wants to buy it. I think it was $120 new, I'll sell for $75 including the inlets that mount on the rad support to connect the ducting. I think the inlets were another $5 or so. The air box is the 14x3 @ 110*. It has a small notch at the back to clear the distributor. It is unpainted. -gw Eric68 Feb 9th, 05, 12:15 AM Originally posted by DOUG G: Eric, that does look good. The air is cooler up higher so I didn't want to go behind the air dam. DOUG G Feb 9th, 05, 11:46 AM Thanks birdman3r Feb 16th, 05, 10:27 AM Not disagreeing with you, just curious as to how the air is cooler up higher. Is hot air being evacuated by a reverse scoop on the hood? 69ProTouring Feb 16th, 05, 11:33 AM Here's Trush's Nascar style airbox: http://www.lateral-g.net/trush/trushunderhood.jpg Eric68 Feb 16th, 05, 12:08 PM Originally posted by birdman3r: Not disagreeing with you, just curious as to how the air is cooler up higher. Is hot air being evacuated by a reverse scoop on the hood? Air is hot from the blacktop and the heat dissipates as it rises. Its like holding your hand close to an iron . . . the closer you put your hand to an iron the hotter it feels. WillS Feb 18th, 05, 04:44 PM The NASCAR style air intake system has me worried. It is on a convertable, but on a coupe it would(?) allow gas vapors into cabin area and kill my few remaining brain cells... Right below the cowl vent is were air is draw for kick panel vents right? fujimook Feb 19th, 05, 02:57 AM For my home made cowl cold air setup, no fumes in the passenger compartment at all. That was one of my concears initially as well. john |
