: BBC oval port gasket matching
CORNHOLIO Dec 2nd, 01, 01:27 PM Hi, I did a search and couldnt come up with anything. So here it is.
How much can you port match the intakes on oval ports?
Can you get them any where near Rectangulaurs?
And does anyone know the part number for the biggest intake gasket made for the ovals?
The thing is I have read numerous articles about the Rect heads being to big, unless your running 500 or bigger cubes. With lots of air demand.
And I got a real good deal on a Dart intake, but was unaware that it was Rect. design.
I am builing a 427 for Pro/Street for my 55.
oger Dec 2nd, 01, 03:11 PM People put big port intakes on oval heads. I don't think it is a good idea but you can almost port match them with a lot of work. Personally I would sell the manifold and find an oval one.

There are differing opinions here because some of the guy's have been successful running oval intakes on rect. port heads and rect. port intakes on oval prot heads! Go figure. Team Chevelle beats this one up every once in a while if you want to go over there and peek around.
I do remember reading where Dart recommends using their tall oval port single plane on rect. ports to keep the velocity up if the engine is miss-matched to the point of needing more "hi-low to lo-mid to mid", mid-range torque. It doesn't seem to hurt that much! Again, go figure.
There was also another mag test where they compared port matched against un-port matched and foud that it really wasn't worth the effort!
I did check my Holley single plane Strip Dominator against my Merlin ovals and they are almost perfect as is. I couldn't hardly believe it after all the port match stuff I had heard/read about. pdq67
roger69 Dec 3rd, 01, 03:32 PM Sell/ trade the intake and get the correct oval port design .
pdq67 Dec 3rd, 01, 04:40 PM He, He!!! build a bigger engine that can use rect. port heads!!! LOL. pdq67
CORNHOLIO Dec 3rd, 01, 10:34 PM Yea I would like to, but I have all the stuff except rods for the 427.
The intake I got for 150, less than half.
I thought it was the Merlin, but ended up being the Dart.
Hmmmmmmm (sigh)

You could probably hog out the oval ports to match, but that would definitely not be the right way to do it. Aside from ending up with paper thin roofs, you'd have a huge port opening funneling into a small port- not good. We used to see that all the time at Wilson.
I'd bet you can find a racer upgrading his oval port motor to rect. ports that would trade you manifolds. Ask around at the track or race shops.
Milan Dec 5th, 01, 04:11 AM Corn, I matched my large ovals to the intake gasket and then matched my intake to the heads. It cant hurt, unless you have the tiny oval heads. I dont know how much it helps but it was winter and I needed a project that didnt cost cash. Based on what I have read(I've read a lot) unless you are gonna spin the engine above 6500 ALL THE TIME, stick with oval heads. unshroud the valves and releave the cylinder walls. My chevelle runs 12.90 ,and it is a pure streetcar with 30 plus yr old worn out susp and a 2000 stall ,at 109 MPH
CORNHOLIO Dec 6th, 01, 06:06 PM They are the big oval, closed style. I just got some gaskets. So will see.
Do they make like a small or large race gasket for ovals?
