Just heard about the Long Beach event being canceled and it looks like it's not just this year, but could be for good.

Here's the press release from Hot August Nights.

Things came to a head last month and decision was made this month.

So long Bruce :waving:
Maybe now things can get back to normal and they will stop 'threatening' to leave Reno ... after all look what that did for the "Reno Swap"

Agree!
I just spoke with my dad and he said they put the mayors of Reno and Sparks on the HAN committee.
John, where's the party this year? lol

I think appointing the local mayor's to the board was a 'good-thing' and will dispell some of the rumors that went flying around over the last few years
Now they can concentrate on keeping the show viable in the Reno/Sparks area and help it function 'in-tune' with local needs and resources, as well as be a great event to attend

I saw a lot of 'well we're making this city money, so we can do what we want - and if they don't like it we'll just leave' attitude in many of the past years communications - hopefully that gets tempered a little more now ...

Oh - "the party", well, looks like your house again l:)
Or Dayton's room at the Legacy :D

I was told they cancelled the Long Beach event due to lack of interest, they only had 2000 cars registered. I don't know how accurate that information is. I thought is was a silly idea to try to group the event together like that anyway.

2000 l:)
They wish! ... (in the words of the late-GREAT Mr. John Wayne) "that isn't exactly the whole truth" ;)
That fiqure came from the November (2010) Long Beach City Counsel meeting update from Bruce Walters (and Goodling) of HAN ... he told them 'everything looks great and we already have over 2000 (of the "expected" 6000) registrations we need to make this a successful event' ...
In fact ... they had less than 400 (at that date) ... and the total received for the LBHAN (before it was taken up again by the HAN Board of Directors at the April meeting) was only @468 (+/- a few) according to Chris K. ... pretty  interest from the "Car Crazy" folks in So.Cal. :p

The other 'problem' was complete lack of interest from the vendors and sponsors they needed to make this venue a success ... obviously, Summit (and the other major Reno sponsors) were not interested in spitting their focus to a less successful venue than the Reno HAN show - besides, most of the 'big sponsors' Bruce was counting on "moving" to LB already have/had long-term contracts and agreements with the local sites and casinos where they set-up their displays and such in the Reno area! The cost of doing this 'again' in LB is a very big pill to swallow for most of them.

This ain't over yet - the mayor (Bob Foster), city counsel and the LBV&CB are really 'pi$$ed' and not about to just say 'Oh well' before tossing the "contracts" Mr. Walters spread all over down there to get those approvals and commitments from them to move there :noway:
That "5-Year" contract may become more than just a collectors item before this is over ...
There could also be that nasty 'Advanced Consideration' funding provided being returned to be worked out ;)
Wait, is that a 'fat-lady' I see in the wings ...

I just plan to try to enjoy this years show again and will wait to see how thing proceed (and they will - think of all the $$$ invloved) before re-registering again after this show

WOW!! Hard to believe they couldn't come up with a decent turnout in SOCAL. Less than 500 cars? Come on man!

I also don't think Long Beach is the best city to choose down there.

Agreed
If you've seen one huge defunk Ocean Liner you've seen them all :D

Anaheim/Buena Park would have been much better
Plenty of large parking lots in the stadium(s), hotels and the amusement parks.
Some organized nights at Petersen Museum, Bob's "Big Boy", the original McDonalds in Downey or even a Randy's Donuts cruise could have been good draws.
Sanctioned cruises on Harbor and/or Katella would be a hoot! (and just maybe I wouldn't get another ticket ...)
Also closer to John Force's. SoCal Speed, Edelbrock and all the other custom/performance/parts shops and suppliers down that way.
Some factory show venues and tours could have made it a good draw for many.
Hope Bruce isn't following this thread - or he gonna owe me more money!

BTW - will we be seeing you at HAN this year?

I'm still up in the air on HAN this year. I put my name on the waiting list quite a while ago, but have not been contacted. I have a couple friends trying to get me to go, one doesn't want to drive his car and is trying to get me to put mine on his double trailer. Not really my style to trailer a car. I haven't been up there n years and not have my car registered, not sure I want to. I enjoy A&W and cruising Sparks, just to long of a drive for a one night deal in the Buick.

Even if "HAN" left the Reno/Sparks area, there would still be an event there... it would be called something else. And I think it would still draw quite the crowd.

Very cool to see this happen for Reno. As a kid going was one of the highlights of the year. Sad to say now that I have moved to Texas i just dont have the money to go :-( Maybe one day the old girl will get to go back.

Can't blame you, I was the same until a couple weeks ago ;)
Supposed to have family at cabin that week, so I wasn't to sure about getting to spend the time I like exploring the different sites and venues :(
Looks like I've got the 22569 from group to MIA for that time (hopefully that doesn't change ...)

As far as driving vs. trailering - we all understand you're "Build'em - Drive'em" philosophy
But ... with I-80 still under re-building/improvements (:p) that have the paving 'all tore up' from Donner/Truckee to Boomtown I would see keeping a detailed vehicle out of harms way as being a good thing this year (actually until 2013+)
You can check http://www.getacross80.com/ as time get closer to get a feel for how things look, but I would say having my vehicle secured on a nice trailer until the pavement is, at least, 'half-way' smooth again a positive action.

I agree that it's one heck of a commitment to make the trip for just a day or so - BUT!!!
I can only imagine how well your craftsmanship on that rocketship would be recieved

From past observations, I think overheating on the cruise is just part of the experience for many l:)

Oh, and is that 'your' right or my right :D

You mean 'something' like RAN ;)

We'll have to touch-base in another month or so to see what's folks plans are :beers:

Good point about I-80, I swear they are never going to finish that. How many years has it been? Seems like one section or another is always under construction. My last trip over the hill, I saw some of what you were talking about. I won't know for sure either way until the time is closer.

Virginia St has been good to me the last 2 years.
Won $500 in 2009, and, $600 in 2010.
John, dinner is on me again if I win this year.
Your chair is reserved??
