1998 Camaro w/3800 V6 has less than 50,000 miles and started cutting out. Was running perfect and great fuel mileage. Car cuts out as soon as you step on the gas. It then picksup and runs smooth. Runs rough at idle. Went to 5th going up a hill (pretty steep), and cut out bad to almost dying, downshifted to 4th and was fine to finish out the hill in, toped out and shifted to 5th and was fine going down the other side. I replaced the fuel filter, but felt that there might be something electrical going on. Finally took it to the shop. They said #6 fuel injector was funny. Huh? I said it felt like an electrical connection, so is there an electrode on the end of the fuel injector? The shop wasn't much help as they wanted $500 to replace the injector. I told him good luck on his next career and walked. Went to a good mechanic and he couldn't find anything wrong with the fuel injector and suggested that it was definetely electrical and said to start with the plug wires. Any ideas? Whats needed to do a basic tuneup on this motor. Hard to work on and get at all the parts.

I would check the spark plug wires real well. They have problems with them leaking spark under heavey loads. I've seen about 6 or so with that problem. A quick check would be to have a friend sit inside the car and put it in gear and give the car some gas, while he's pushing on the brake too. Listen for any type of ticking or arcing noise coming from the engine.
