I have a 97 rs with about 49,000 miles on it. Right after i filled up with gas last week, the car started to hesitate and almost stall, also the service engine light soon light came on. If i hit the gas the light will start flashing then go solid after i take my foot off the gas. Owners manual says it is a Fuel/air mixture problem, i have no idea how to fix this problem.

Anyone have any suggestions.

Sounds like it could be your O2 sensor it feeds your ECM information on the exhaust content wether the car is running lean or rich. Its about a $40 part. ITs screwed into your exhaust pipe around the manifold or cat. conv.Pretty easy to replace just unplug and unscrew. There are several possibilities including the prom or chip but this is the most common thing I have found.

Try to tighten your gas cap first. OBII computers run a vacuum check on the evap system every time you start the car. If the cap is loose it will set the engine light. Also if the cap is loose enough it can make the car bad.

Hey Randy there are no more chips.1996 and above are obd11 and have electronically erasable computers that can only be programmed by another computer.Anyway if the check engine light flashes on and off on a obd11 vehicle it means emissions are so extreme that possible damage 'will' occur to catalytic convertor if the problem is not fixed."usually" this is misfiring that pumps raw unburned gas out exhaust overheating the convertor.Have it checked out and don't start replacing a bunch of parts.

[Is this related to the EVAP canister? Book says that it could be bad. It is i believe mounted in front od the back left wheel

take it somewhere and get it looked at by a reputable mechanic so you don't spend money on unecessarily. If it is emmissions related, it may be under warranty.

If you have no fear, you're not going as fast as you could.

Yeah, flashing service engine soon light indicates a misfire condition. Since this happened right after you got gas, I'd guess that you somehow got a batch of bad gas.

no , its the gas cap, tighten it down. at least make sure it clicks a few times... as said previously, the obd2 system (not obd-11 (thats a future computer after obd10) runs a system test that tests for fuel pressure and vacuume. if it finds a drop in tank pressure , it will trigger a "service engine soon" code...

I've never had "bad gas" in my life. (well except for that 1 egg salad sandwich) hehehehe

Yeah Chris I should have put in the number 2 instead of trying to make it look like the roman numeral '11'(2) like it's usually written.I think & hope everyone got the idea.
I'm not sure the check engine light would flash because the gas cap was loose but it would for sure make the light come on steady.I still think it's from misfiring.
