Hey guys, I've been standing back watching everyone's builds and thought is was time to start my own thread to keep all of my stuff in one place. I am building this car with my grandfather(actually he tells me what to do and i do it while he sits in a chair behind me). This car is going to take me a very long time to build due to the lack of money. I've built many race cars in the past but never a hobby car. Due to my grandfathers cancer we had to leave racing behind and find a new hobby. This will be the last car i will be able to build with him and this car is everything that he has wanted. I will being asking a lot of questions along the way because his memory is fading everyday(although he will not admit it).

a few pictures of the car

Any advice or help will be much appreciated!

Welcome to the fray :-). Sorry about your grandfathers health. Looks like a good start but I think some more info will be needed before any advice can be given. 1) What's the plan, Restored to original, Restification, Concours, nice driver? 2) What's missing? All we can see is a shell, subframe, rear and a couple of seats. 3) Do you have an engine, fenders, glass, interior? How much rust is in the body?

Again sorry to hear about your grandfather. Please give us more on what your plan is for the car. Yes it takes a lot of time. I am in the home stretch but have been down for 1 1/2 yrs. Ask away on your questions. We are here to help.

Looks like a great project. It is great that you are building it with your grandfather and that it means so much to him. I am sure that will make 2 dreams come true. There is enough info on this site to build your car from top to bottom. Money should not be an issue if you are patient and do lots of research and do most of the work yourself. Learn from everyone elses mistakes and knowledge. You will both be happy in the end. I hope you get to finish so you can both enjoy what you built together.

Ask lots of questions and post lots of pictures. Follow the builds that seem the closest to what you are building.

I hope gramps is around for a long time so he can take the car for a spin when it is done.

Best of luck to you both.

The car is a 69, six cylinder, standard interior(black), x11, lemans blue, parchment top, hockey striped. I bought the car for a six because I wanted to put a big block in the car(no power aditives) and didn't want to have to worry about keeping it original. Although the inside I want to be close to original. I was thinking about bring the paint back to it's factory color.

Thanks guys, I couldn't ask for better people to help me with this

First question up.. I am cleaning the sub frame today I thought about coating it a bed liner type of paint. Is that a good idea? There is very minimal rust on the car. The rear fenders have been replaced and the floors roof trunk are solid as a rock. I have some surface rust on the front fenders. Do I need to clean them up and prime them or leave it for the paint man? I have a 12 bolt rear end to replace the 10 bolt. I also have monoleaf susp in the rear. I was thinking of putting multileaf but will it work with the original mounting brackets and shock brackets? The spoiler seems to be dry rotting. Can it be fixed or do I need a new one?

The surface rust I would leave for the moment, if your going to have someone else do the body work/paint your better off at the least using the same products they use for compatibility. If you want a multi leaf setup do a search on multi leaf conversion there are a few threads that cover it and what you'll need to change, keep in mind that if you tub it you will need to do something to mount your shocks. Post some pictures of what you have going on with the spoiler it will make it a little easier to tell what the problem is. As for the bedliner on the sub frame it is tough stuff and it can look good in certain areas when done well, I would say it would be a personal choice thing, for myself being as the sub frame will be visible I wouldn't. I am serious thinking about using the product on the under side of my floor though. At the end of day it's your car and you need to be happy with it, so build it with that in mind.

Welcome Alex. My opinion on the bed liner paint is NO. It's not correct
for the era and I personally think it would look bad. A lot of guys sand
blast and powder coat or paint the sub frame. You may not need to
sand blast it if it's in good shape. To keep the budget down just cleaning
and painting would be fine. IMHO. Good luck to you and your Grandfather.

Thanks Kevin and Al. I thought about using the bedliner paint for the underside as well. Won't do the sub frame that way. I will paint it satin black. I'll do more search on the rear susp.

Hey guys, I'm thinking of getting good used subframe. the subframe i have now needs a lot of work to be where i want it to be. the bottom of the the frame has multiple dents and road scars. All of the body mounts need to be replaced. If anyone has one or knows where to find one close to brandon/jackson ms, please send me a pm or email.

Thanks,
Alex

 I found some unwanted cancer on the so called saddle bags on both sides. I only saw the drivers side at first thinking they cut this for exhaust till i looked deeper and on the passenger side. I bought this car being told it was cancer(rust) free because i have never been a welder and my grandfather is no longer able. I need guidance on what to do please. This really has me down knowing I am still paying for the car and didn't plan on replacing these panels in my budget as well.

Don't let it get to you too much, it is really not as bad as you think. I know you say your not a welder, but everyone who does weld at one had never done it before. My welder has been one of the best tools I have ever bought. You will find all kinds of uses once you get going if you decide to.

Either way if they are repaired or replaced there will be some welding required. If you have access to a MIG and learn to run it, it will save you money over having to farm the work out. The cowl area drains down behind those panels, with a mirror and light you can see some of it the from the top cowl area and the kick panel area inside the body. It may be something, depending on what you find, that you might want to remove the spot wells and access that area to clean it up and take care of while it is easy to do.

Alex, Don't let it get you down. We've all been there at one time or
another. A truely "rust free" car of this age would be almost a miracle
find unless it had already been restored. All of the inner structure on
these cars require welding. That's just part of a uni-body vehicle.
Check your local Craigs List, etc. for good used mig welders that may not
break the bank. You may be able to rent one but in the long run that's
probably not cost effective. Keep in mind if the areas you need to weld
won't be seen, "pretty" means nothing. These cars can take quite a long
time to rebuild so be patient and work your way through it.

Jun 19th, 11, 09:21 AM
I bought this car being told it was cancer(rust) freeThat is a very common situation with these cars and then we find out quite the opposite, unfortunately. Before purchase you have to look them over with a fine tooth comb and then some.

You say you've built many race cars in the past so you shouldn't have too much trouble.

Jun 19th, 11, 04:27 PM
Thanks for the help guys! I have built many cars but always cut and rivet or bolt parts back on:D. I geuss the thing that has me down the most is knowing at the rate I am going this will take another year that i don't think he has. I will just take it for what it is and do it right. I will work on getting a welder first then the next couple of months order the parts one at a time as I can afford them. Long as nothing happens to my painter, the paint and other body work won't be as expensive as one of my friends is a profesional painter. Thats one thing to look forward to

I'm also in the middle of a build right now that is costing more than expected and I'm having issues pop up and did not think were there. Don't give up on it. My father had bought the Camaro I have now, for a project he could work on with me and my son all together. We never got started on it before he died in Jan '10. He was happy just knowing we were going to get it done. Just do it the right way and keep us posted on the progress. This site is the best thing to use for a project.

Thanks David, I hate to hear that about your father. I'm sure he was a great man and shows by the things he has done. I'm not giving up, even though it takes all day to figure out how remove one panel and haven't even started cutting. I'm taking my time because I want to do it right. I just figure out how some of them come off. It gets me down at times, but then I read others builds and look at pictures.

Good luck with your build :beers:

I have a funny. :D well to start off my grandfather has been down this week and hasn't been able to make it in the shop to oversee/watch me work on the car. Today I have the passenger side saddle bag off. The first thing he said "why in the heck is half of the tore off?" I replied, "I plan on replacing both sides." He replies again, "just bondo the rust places!"

All he wants to do is get the car running, not worry about the cars life. I want the car to last so I'm going my route. I'm sure TC will agree

Just a little update guys, I have not been working on the car much the past couple of days. I've been looking for a decent welder for a decent price. No luck this week, but not giving up. If all else fails I will order the pieces I need to put the car back together. Couple of pictures of the passenger side after removal.

This part wasn't to bad now that i know how to do it. Now just have to get the surface rust cleaned up and ready for the new parts.

allanjs
Jun 27th, 11, 05:32 PM
Alex, That surface rust doesn't look too bad at all. You're fortunate. Sand
blast and primer and you're ready to go. You might want to try
a wanted add on your local Craigslist for a welder. I'm sure there are a few
just sitting in garages collecting dust. Also check out garage sales. Welders
are often available that way. Another possibility is a dealer. They take in trades
at times and might have something for you or know someone looking to sell.
Try a wanted add in the classifieds here on TC.

Thanks Al, do you think rattle can primer would be ok on this application? I was thinking two coats of primer would be fine and a coat of flat black. Also, after prime and paint do i need to remove the paint from the areas for welding or will it be fine with the paint left on?

Alex

allanjs
Jun 28th, 11, 05:11 AM
Alex, You will get varying opinions on the primer but the general consensus
will be to use an epoxy primer. Epoxy will protect it for life and I don't
believe you would need to top coat it. For welding it is best to be down to
bare metal at the weld spots. If you know where you are going to weld, just
tape those areas so they stay bare. You could use a weld through primer on
those areas if you want. Hopefully some of the pros will offer their opinions.

Does anyone know if this is a good deal?
Firepower welder fp160.. 220 mig - $300?

The welder looks in pretty good shape. It can use gas or flexcore.

Advise if this would be a good price to pay.

Thanks Alex

I thought so too Rod

Jul 2nd, 11, 07:41 AM
Alex, I think that welder has 4 fixed heat settings. A variable heat setting
machine would be more versatile but is not absolutely necessary. Are repair
parts, including tips etc. available for it ? Does the price include set up for
gas including tank and gage ? Those item add up quickly. Price might be a
touch high but I'm not familiar with that brand.

69Z28X11
Jul 2nd, 11, 02:07 PM
Thanks Al, I can get it for 200 after talking to the guy. It also has everything to start welding with gas and flexcore. I made sure I told him I had nothing for welding and he said he get me everything for that price.

Do I need to pass?

69Z28X11

Good news Al, the welder has variable wire feed and temp. I think it will work just fine. I had to pay a little extra for the drive getting it but I think I did well enough.

Alex, Keep in mind I'm not a professional welder but I think $200 is a pretty
good deal and will get you on your way. I did a Google search and found this
manual http://www.thermadyne.com/IM_Uploads/DocLib_2644_56-1842.pdf
Thermadyne has been around for quite a while. The only thing I would question
is replacement parts. Maybe the seller can give you some info on that.

allanjs
Jul 2nd, 11, 05:08 PM
Alex, You beat me to the post. You'll do fine with the welder. Don't even mess
around with fluxcore. Go straight to solid wire(.023) with gas.

69Z28X11
Jul 2nd, 11, 05:46 PM
Thanks again Al, I could tell I beat to the post. I did some research too and beleive I can get parts close to home for it I i need them. I will check for sure. Slowly but surely I am getting closer to making progress after a huge step back.

Due to work and my replacing wheel bearings in my brothers truck, I finally had some time to work on the car this past week. Also been working on getting the subframe mounts replaced. I ordered the inserts to replace the rusted areas and have one installed. PS the inserts have to be cut to fit the frame you have. I'll take more pictures of the of the process and update soon.

Don't be to harsh guys, this is my first time doing any metal work and this is the method I used. Open for corrections and ideas.

First I took my new peice lined the bolt holes up(hard to do when its rusted out!) and took a straight edge and marked where to cut the excess metall off.
http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h466/Watsonchevy2189/1314000955.jpg

clean the original mount:
http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h466/Watsonchevy2189/1314001029.jpg

take the new piece that you have cut the excess metal from and line the bolt holes again and clamp it down and trace out on the original mount:
http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h466/Watsonchevy2189/1314001214.jpg

cut inside the lines and fit the new mount
http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h466/Watsonchevy2189/1314001202.jpg

Weld in the new bracket
http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h466/Watsonchevy2189/1314001189.jpg

grind the welds down and smooth the area

Just want to make a couple observations. I cannot tell from your pictures, but it does not look like you are weaving your welds. It appears you are just pulling it. If you pulling it, then you need to weave your weld back and forth from one panel to the adjacent as you pull it. A zig-zag pattern. Also, always angle your edges on the thicker metals creating a crevice for your weld. Doing that allows for full penetration of the weld creating a good strong hold.

Other than all that, looks like a great job you are doing. Keep it up and don't get burnout:)

69Z28X11
Aug 23rd, 11, 04:50 PM
Thanks jeremy, I was aware of the zig zag pattern but never heard about cutting the metal at an angle. I will try this on the last mount I have to do. Like I said, new to all of this and any more pointers will be appreciated. I have learned a lot just watching videos and welding scrap peices around the shop. I actually enjoy it so I don't think I will get burnout, but then again who knows.

Took Jeremy's adivse and tried it out. Man was I impressed, This looks a lot better and can deffinately see the metal penetration.

Nice looking weld. That's the proper method for welding thicker metals. On sheet metal, you'll have to just use tack welds with very short stitch welds no more than an inch to keep from warping the metal. Also, on sheet metal you do not want to bevel the edge like you did on the thicker metal.

You'll have the car finished and driving next week right?:)

Aug 27th, 11, 11:18 PM
Man you have no idea how bad I want that(Like a broke fat kid in the window of a candy store staring at the chocolate bar on the shelf!l:))! This is actually a lot of fun in the process though. I never thought I would be able to weld, but I can and I like it!

haha! great analogy:D

I have spent the past 9 years restoring my car. I was fortunate that I did drive it for a year before I started tearing into her, though. It gets overwhelming at times sinking tons of money in the car and working and working seeing only little progress. However, I see the light at the end of the tunnel now, which has given me new vigor to, "giterdun."

Just hang in there and treat each section of the car as a project. Do not look at the whole picture. View it in steps. If you start to feel overwhelmed, then take a break from the car. That's what I have had to do.

No kidding, my goal right no is to get the frame cleaned up and ready to put the suspension back together. haha! great analogy:D

Do you have any pics? I have many ideas and nothing set in stone :stirpot:

I am terrible at taking pictures. I can take pictures of whatever you would like to see though. You are welcome to PM any time you want/need to and ask questions or bounce ideas off of me. I'm not your quintessential source, but I can hold my own. By the way, I'm north of you 3 hours. I'm just outside of Memphis, Tn. I bought a 69 Camaro in Brandon a few years ago

haha! I've been around:) just been busy. I've been trying to dig out the seats from my shed, but every time I have time its raining.

Cool upper arms! That's progress. One of these days, we'll have enough parts on the shelf to build a car. I added to my parts collection this week as well. I purchased some LED tail lights. The stock dim lights were weighing heavy on my mind. I don't want anyone rearending me, so I finally broke down and bought some. I also got a really cool billet LED engine compartment light that has a gravity switch.

What are you going to paint your frame with? I'm trying to get out and sandblast my frame and am debating to paint it or just powder coat it.

Not sure what he is going to do. I went to look at a friends car that is almost done and it looks really good. He is doing it for me as we traded out some parts he needed and still needs. I will let you know what it is and show pictures when I find out. I'm going to go look at an LS motor tonight and just might bring it home. I'll keep you posted:yes:

Sounds good on the tail lights! Throw some pics up of what you have. I would like to see them.

Did ya pick up that LS1?

He is holding it for me, just did not have a way to get it to the house!(not enough musclel:)) I plan on getting a buddy to go with me today and picking it up. Its in pieces but thats how you find the deals! Has everything with it including two sets of heads. I just had a guy running the same motor in a 70 RS running 9.20's in the quater with the same motor. 8.80's on nitros. He is going to get all of the info for his build and plan on going the same route. Next purchase will be a stroker kit.

I'll get some pics up when it's sitting at the house!

Here are some pics of the motor on the stand. I have it bagged and ready to tear down. I will probably be selling some of the parts as I'm going with a stroker kit(crank, rods, and pistons). I think I made a pretty good deal. 500 dollars ain't bad!

I see you have a set of 98 heads. Is the computer from a 98 model?

Sorry I missed you the other night. I've been feeling under the weather the past couple of days and crashed early early the other night<<<Old fart

Sep 27th, 11, 09:11 AM
The computer and one set of heads are supposed to be out a 2001 Camaro. Not sure how to tell on he computer(haven't even looked). I know the heads are older and newer because they are dated. I'll have to look at the computer and see. Should it mattter about the computer?

makoshark
Sep 28th, 11, 08:50 PM
I don't remember what it is about the 98 computer that makes it undesirable, but anyone from 99 up is what you want. I think the 98 computer has something to do about flashing it, though. I see the 853's you have, what's the # on the other set of heads?

makoshark
Sep 28th, 11, 08:56 PM
Never mind, those are 98 heads. There's nothing wrong with the 98 heads. They are just less desirable because of the way the coil packs mount to them. Most prefer the 99 and up versions because they do not have the valve covers that have the mounts built into them for the coils as well as being perimeter bolt. The 853's have the center bolt style valve covers and allow you to remote mount the coil packs if you wanted to do that. Other than that, they flow the same as the 98 heads. The 243's are the LS6 head that flow the best from the factory. The 317's flow the same as the 243's, but they are for 4" bore cylinders, aka LQ9 motors. The 853 heads have a notch in them that require composite head gaskets as where the 241's and 243's allow you to run the MLS head gasket. Port the 853's and they will give you tons of power.

What exhaust are you planning to run? If you want a dual magnaflow 2.5" kit I know where to get it at a price no one has ever seen:)

I just picked up one of these:D

then off to the machine shop to get a good cleaning

That was the good news:yes:

Now the bad news! The number six piston rod bearing was spun and not sure if the crank is any good. Also when this block gets back from the machine shop I will be putting it up for sale as I have a chevy 6.0 motor waiting for me to pick up. I also purchased a rack and pinion steering kit from a member on here and it just arrived. I'll add pics of it as soon as I get the chance. Work and meetings this time of year has me at almost a stand still it feels like! Just a little more progress with a fall back at the same time. Now I will have to do this all over again on the new motor!

I had to make a visit across town to my machinest this morning. I couldn't get him on the phone lately to find out the status of my engine build. I dropped it off in June or July, don't remember. He still isn't done, so I wanted to put my eyes on it today. Supposedly, will be ready by next weekend. He had a clearance issue and had to pull the short block all back apart. Hopefully, you won't run into the issues I have. I got out today and got everything reblasted. Tomorrow I am going to get it all primed in. Subframe, core support, fender extensions, bumper brackets, drag link and engine stands.

Any thoughts on fixing this problem prior to me grinding on the painted frame would be great. I know there is supposed to be enough room there for two shims, but that gap just looks really big.

allanjs
Mar 24th, 12, 11:13 AM
Alex, You won't know how many, or what thickness, shims are needed until
the sub is back in the car. Hold off grinding anything until it is back together and
then take it to an alignment shop.

Mar 24th, 12, 02:26 PM
Thanks Al, do you think I should put enough shims in it to clear for now? Or just leave it unbolted?

very sorry to hear of this loss. My youngest son is a law enforcement officer. Not just anyone can be one. After 2 ride alongs with my son, I know for a fact, I couldn't do what they do. It takes truely special people to endevour into that field. To lose one, is a loss of which is one too many....

69Z28X11
May 6th, 12, 10:57 PM
Yes he was killed in the line of duty. He and two other officers were serving a search warrant on a house and the shooter was in the bathroom. The other two officers walked away with with shots to the arms, hands, and one in the leg. He was a great friend and will be truely missed. Thanks for all the prayers and support. The community here has been a great support as well. It's not easy doing what we do. Some people think we are always out to get them which is not the case. They never trust us until we are needed and they dial 911. It has opened many eyes to the danger of what we do.

The car is a V8 2SS/RS 6spd. I test drove many cars till i decided to go with this one. The only thing I did not like about the Dodges, besides the fact it's not a chevy, were the insides. plenty of room, just way out dated. I wanted the old school look but with up to date technology and driving ability. The Camaro is tight(not much room) on the inside and has a few blind spots, but the driving of the two is uncomparable.

Hey guys, I'm still here. I know its been a while but a lot has happened. I lost my grandfather mid June. Talk about a rough couple of years. Never seems to look up. I still go in the garage and try to bring myself to start working on her again. Just brings back to much and its hard to do anything with out him. With my very tight budget right now and for next few months, I hope to start again on her soon. I want to do the car right the first time not piece it together to get it driving. So hope is not lost, just taking a back seat ride till strength and money come back. Never thought a car could take so much of someone. Lots of work still needs to be done. I did manage to get the firewall apart and ready to replace the lower cowl panel. I will get some pictures up soon of the progress prior to his passing. I haven't touched the car since he went down hill and couldn't go outside again. Anyways, I wanted to check in with you guys and let yall know that I was still around and "WILL" finish her. I've been watching others builds and haven't logged on as a user in a while. Cars are looking good, turn a wrench for me.

Sorry to hear of your loss... Been through that with all four grandparents myself. Never an easy event...

Great to see you sticking to it and springing back into the action. The subframe assembly is looking awesome! :beers: Keep it up!

Thanks Todd, it has been rough but he is in a better place. It's what he would have wanted. I was going to have the sub done in another week, but the brake caliper problem has set me back probably another month unless they send me something no charge. Plans were to have the brakes on and brake lines run up. Then to have the sway bar put into place. I was going to order the sway bar but the money for the sway bar may have to go the calipers instead. We will see tomorrow what happens with the brakes. Def starting to get some more work done though.

Caliper problem is fixed! The right calipers should be here later part of next week. Sway bar should be here about the same. Starting back on the body tonight and throughout the weekend. Will take a few pics of the progress on the body and post them tomorrow afternoon.

Just found out that I have two inch drop spindles on my car. I've read several bad problems with wheel fitment and such. Is there a certain wheel size I have to run? Should I just wait and buy a different set of front spindles and brakes? Not sure what I need to do. Any advice would be appreciated

Did some more research, supposedly these are the wheels that will that will clear. Also lager wheels will clear with no more than 5 inch back spacing I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong please.

Front calipers came in today! They look good for now, will definitely need a brake upgrade in the future though. I managed to finish the steering and brake setup on the sub frame. Starting Monday or Tuesday I have a friend that knows a lot about metal work and is going to help me start getting the rear mini tubs(custom fab) in. Should take a few weeks though. Very anxious to get this thing started. Waiting on the square tubing for the front braces before we go any further with the firewall and cowl fixes. Lots of changes have been made since and will continue to change. Stay tuned as things are fixing to get good! I'll do my best to keep everything up to date. I forget to take pics as I go a lot. Here are a couple of the frame though. Will try and get the before and after shots of the metal work up as we go.

Hey Alex...great story! Glad your Grandpa is nearby and can hang out with you while the project progresses. Did he have a '69 Camaro back in the day, or just lusted for one? Belair Bob's has a repop subframe for $989 and shipping for another $500. I know you're on a budget, so why not go with the beat-up subframe for now and replace it with a nicer one in the future? If it isn't a show car, then no one will be going under it to deduct points. Give Gramps my best...another Alex

Thanks Alex, unfortunately he passed away last year. That's part of the reason why I took an 8 month break from the build. As promised to him build continuous. Taking a little longer not having the know how but hey what's the fun in knowing everything. Been an awesome build so far, just hate waiting for coin to get to the next part. The cold weather and lack of a good heater has put a little stop on things for a week or so. Saving money for parts not a heater lol. Should be back in the 50s at night soon.

Ha ha, thanks Mako! Feels good to be back working on it. Its where I get away and its like he is still there beside me. Sent you an email a while back. Hows the car coming along??? Ever make that build thread!? No excuses as far as a rookie would go. Look at mine, I've self taught everything I've done so far lol. Good to hear from ya man.

I don't recall getting your email? My car has been moving along, but it hasn't been easy. Join over at lateral-g.net and check out my build over there...http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=35882

Got a little more work done. Here area few pics of the progress. Got a little further just haven't taken any more pics. I'll get some tonight when I step back in the shop. Also bit the bullet and ordered a pair of DSE tubs. Time is key to keep the car on schedule for the painter so instead of adding metal to the old ones, I'm taking a short cut on DSE tubs.
