This is soooooooo REDICULUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!

I just came inside to sit down a few minutes, cool off & vent my anger & frustrations about the chrome molding around the front windshield.

It’s been around 102 degrees outside in the Lone burning Star State today.

ARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

What a hassle!!!!!!

For any of you who have to mess with this in the future. Be patient. After you remove the obvious screws on the top of the header molding, there are 2 more; one on the driver’s side & one on the passenger side. Each of the “hidden” screws are under the rubber weather stripping.

After I took the rearview mirror off & the sun visors & all, I was really to start gently prying & tapping, prodding & coercing from every angle. I tapped putty knives under the molding of the inside of the car first, so that they were wedged between the windshield & would just stay there on their own. Then, I took my tire iron & slid it through the hole where top latch had been. Then I pretty must did the same thing from where the rearview mirror had been. Then, I just kept working it from every angle. I found tapping small flat head screw drivers in (underneath the middle, where the moldings overlap) worked best. I just kept prying & tapping, prodding & coercing as best I could. It’s that goo they put under the header moldings at the factory. It acts kind of like glue after all the screws are out. Man… What a hassle.
It's a good thing I play the guitar too. I went through about all 6 strings "sawing" the windshield loose from its seat.
Tomorrow should be a good bit better (still hot though). But I can finally start getting to that surface rust that has been out of my reach for so long. :)

Quit whining, your up north where it's nice and cool :D. I've been looking in my attic all day for parts I cant seem to find. Thermometer on the front porch reads 111 degrees, and it's hotter in the attic.:p

I think the record in these parts was 103 for yesterday, last I heard they were saying the temp is 106-108. I think the record just got smoked... too hot for a vert... gotta put the top up and crank up the A/C.

Yes, the windshield and header trims are a hassle. I used two small pry bars to get mine off and what you find is the dum-dum putty underneath is pretty much what holds the headers in place.

Believe it or not, the a/c is what got this whole thing started for me. One thing leads to another you know.
I've been hooking up the rest of my ac system lately, basically the dryer; compressor & condenser have been missing for years.
While I was at it, I started getting rid of a little bit of surface rust that was visible under the windshield, which let to removing the molding & windshield, which led to more rust than I anticipated, which led to more sanding & prep, etc., etc.
As for as the rust goes on this car though, I can’t complain at all, as it’s been very minor. Really it’s all just surface rust that I find here & there, no pitting or holes. I think that is excellent for a car with original marina blue paint & all. I found the car in a small town in southern New Mexico about 10 tears a flow. :)

You are right about the header hassle. Mine originals were rusted bad;so like a fool I just bought your standard replacement.MISTAKE ONE.Then I read up somemore on the subject.Got the best replacements. At least they fit so so.Then after about 5 years I found a chrome place that fixed the originals, and put them back on. Only original header moldings fit like originals.Bottom line.Like you said WHAT A HASSLE........

My original header moldings were pretty well rusted through but I kept them and may see about having them welded up down the road.

I just installed a pair of header moldings from Classic Headquarters. I was expecting the fight of my life after reading about them here. They took some muscle but I had mine on in about an hour and they look pretty good. They are a little wavy if you look down them but not bad considering the horror stories I have heard.
