I have a 67 SS 396 convertible and I'm looking for bolt on stainless exhaust that reproduces the stock appearance. Has anyone used the stainless kit listed below on a 67 SS 396 convertible? How was the fit/finish of the kit? Did the exhaust require any re-bend/modification? I've seen exhausts built specifically for convertibles and want to make sure I get the proper kit. Also looking for something that's truly bolt on.

Brandan,

Thanks for the info. Let me know how the install goes. It sucks when there is no local performance shop to get these larger parts. Shipping in general from Ricks/Camaro Central/Classic has always been a bit pricy even on the smaller parts.

I ended up calling ricks and the best they could do was 15% off and i had to pay tax (fl) and the shipping was around $55. Over all we will see how it goes. It is dropped shipped from Stainless works in Ohio so it may be a while till I get it. Also I still have to put in the transmission, redo the rear end and nuy the wheels and tires. so it looks like it will be a while till i get the exhaust in.. but will definitley post how is goes.

I installed a Stainless Works system from Rick's in my small block 68 convertible many years ago. The fit was very good. To make it look more stock, you can get original type stainless clamps from HBC.

Jeff - I think SS 350/300 hp was 2 inch diameter right? What size did you install?

Ricks has them in 2 and 2.5 inch (off the top of my head so I may be wrong) the 2 inch was SB all models and 2.5 for the BB. Also the vert had a flat press on both of the tubes to get it under the x brace (clearance) so that it wouldn't rattle. This is all off the top of my head so I may be wrong... chime in to correct but that is what I was thinking or first came to mind.....

My car is a 327/275 hp. The system I got was 2.25" head pipes, 2" over the axle & tail pipes. The head pipes were flattened to fit between the x-brace and the floor pan.

Brandon,

Did you try going directly to Stainless Works? The part below is a bit cheaper and it looks like it can be delivered to a local dealer for pickup.

Thanks Mike:thumbsup:, The link that you have is for the aluminized exhaust. There is a button to click on the SS version and it is comparable to Classic's price ($756.00 plus shipping).

My dilemma was Classics cheaper price but shipping to me was $249.00, :confused:ouch. or go with ricks and their price was a little higher but their shipping was $55.00. I ended up going with Ricks and the difference was around $40.00. I actually called them to get 15% off.....

I did check the Stainless works and got all excited untill I realized that the SS version was so much more, you have to use the drop down windows. I Thanks for you help Mike...

Brandon,

Yea, I did see that :( Price is still competitive, its $756 and shipping was only 31.00. I'm going to place my order.

call ricks to get a competitive quote on the system.. make sure to ask them for at least 15% off.. i found ricks to be less than Stainless, even though that is where it is coming from... go figure

Brandan,

Did you complete your install? How did it go? Any major modifications to make it fit? I'm still curious if anyone has isntalled the Stainless Works Exhaust on a BB? I want to leave the standard X brace.

Mike, I got the kit and it is still in the box. I could install the exhaust but I still need to put the transmission and go through the rearend. It will be alot easier if the exhaust is out when I do this.

Anyway, I am looking to put it in some time next month and I will post here how it goes. I guess I should have at least opened the box......

I really haven't decided if I am going to install it or have a shop do it. I was told somewhere that since this is for my convertible that I may have to bend the two pipes that go through the x pipe (flatten one end on both pipes to reduce chatter). I don't have a bender or a lift so it may be easier if I take it to a shop and they do it. Not to mention it would save my back.....

Brandan,

I did see a few posts the talked about flattening the section that went through the X brace. The current exhaust on my 67 doesn't look flattened but it may not be 2 1/2 inch pipes.

Installing it on your back in the garage doesn't sound like fun either :)

did you try Pipes?

I did try Pypes but all of their system are X pipe setups. With an X or H pipe setup the cross section hits the drive shaft. I'm trying to keep the configuraiton totally stock (no mods to the X brace, pipes, etc...).

Tony,

After reviewing the Pypes site I did see the quote below :) Looking at the drive shaft tunnel on my car I don't see how it would fit.

"Add the fact that the system includes the ONLY horsepower generating X-pipe kit designed specifically to run in the driveshaft tunnel for extra ground clearance. Pypes is making it!"

Tony,

Don't forget, this is a convertible install. The X brace to stiffen the chassis is what gets us convertible owners in trouble. I checked out some of the install pictures on their website and the one convertible install definitely had a modified X brace. It had to be lowered 2.5 inches to get the proper clearence.

I never did/heard of "flattening" the pipes for the Xbrace. I used shims and longer nuts and bolts to get the right clearance...nothing worse than sitting at a stop light with a pipe rattle

I think that brace for the verts is more for side impact, to avoid damage to the drive shaft if the tunnel closed up some from a hit. Just fyI

My Dad has Stainless Works on his 69Z. Its a nice enough product and doesnt need to much "massaging" to fit ok. The new oem style hangers needed some work to fit. A few of the pipes that came in the kit needed to be shortened slightly. All in all if your really concerned about factory appearance get a Gardener exhaust.

I bought and installed an aluminized "factory" system for my '67 BB convertible. It's a mixture of 2.25 primary and 2.0 inch exhaust tip pipes. The kit I used (from D&R back in the day) routed well and was very quiet (which is why I bought it, convertibles being a little louder than coupes).

I did put a few spacer washers between the belly pan and the body for extra clearance where needed and the two main pipes were pre-flattened as they should have been.

Overall, it was a great kit that came with every hanger, nut and bolt required for installation. I can only think the stainless system would be a little lighter.

I don't think the belly pan would offer anything by way of protection during a crash, side impact or otherwise. As all first gen Camaros didn't have side impact beams in the doors, squishing the tranny tunnel would be one of your last concerns before you died from being T-boned. The belly pan was meant to stiffen (somewhat) the chassis in general, nothing more.

Summit Racing carries a lot of products that are not in their catalog. I always check with them first as their prices are very good. I got my Flomaster kit for my 69 BB, I think it was about $550 with free shipping and if it is the wrong part or whatever they ususally pay the shipping back. Shopping around pays off. Just like I got the IROC steering sector at Autozone for $116, check and see what Classic asks!!!! Keep em running, The Camaro Guy in the shop today getting ready for the Charlotte Motor Speedway event next week . . .you all come now.
