Hi, I haven't posted in quite a while but always found
this site to be very informative for repairs, etc.. for my 69' Camaro.
My wife has a 93' Camaro Z28 which we bought new and have tried to keep it in excellent condition.
We're having a problem with the engine stalling after stating it. The scenario is it always starts fine and a couple of minutes after getting it in traffic at a light the engine stops. Sometimes it starts up just fine and away it goes and other times it's more difficult to start again. This problem doesn't happen all the time and when it does it's after it's warmed up and of course when your in traffic.
I'm wondering if it's distributor related or possibly the tank fuel pump. Plugs & wires are a year old. Other than this stalling issue the car performs flawless. Chevy -Like a Rock! Right??

These kind of problems are a pain to troubleshoot. It could be the ign switch, ign module, fuel pump, or its relay, or even ECM power, injector relay.

I would try to setup a 12-15 volt LED test light and tape it to the console for troubleshooting. Then attach it s lead to the power circuit for monitoring. I suggest an LED because they are high impedence and draw very little current, ie. 80 milliamps.

You might be able to hear the fuel pump working, or not, when it stops.

I have a 93 Z M6 with 107,000 miles. So, I have run into most problems that can be encountered. It sounds like the opti crap is going out. I am on my third one. I will give you one piece of advise that will save you money in the long run. When I rebuilt the car three years ago, I replaced the opti spark, water pump, coil, ignition module and most of the other sensors to ensure trouble free operation as well as add CAI, headers, hi flow cat and exhaust. Well, 18 months later the new GM water pump goes out and ruins the opti. There goes about $700.00. Well, I took it to the local Chevy dealer and let them replace the water pump, opti and the alternator (bearing starting to squeal). When they replace the stuff now, they give a lifetime warranty on the parts and labor. Thank god I did it, 45 days later the alternator went out with less than 2,000 miles on it. Replaced for free. Just my 2 cents.

You will definately hear the fuel pump pressurize when you turn the key.

the fourth gen f-bodies are not something to own if you don't wanna work on it yourself
gm dealers charge an arm and a leg to work on them

the opti should show a check engine light, check the code, there is normally a low or high-resolution code, the problem with optis is the optical eye and carbon tracking, as far as distributors go it really does a good job

ok, check your fuel pressure, schraeder valve on the fuel rail, don't recall what the stock fuel pressure should be, get a haynes or chilton and see, changing the stock fuel pump requires lowering the rear end, unless you want to cut a hole in the rear under the hatch and save some time (it's really easy this way)

another culprit could be the ign module or coil, both are mounted on dr side head
