: Mac's Chevrolet Super Stock Vintage Racer

I bought this Camaro in 2002 from a gentleman from Omaha Nebraska, Jim Hayes, who owned and campaigned this car from 1972 through 1975. The car was always a front runner in its NHRA Super Stock class since being delivered to its original owner and proprietor Al McNamara of Mac's Chevrolet. Al had a co-owner in this car, Charles Jacobs, who drove the car to the NHRA division championship in 1969. Charlie also won the Manufacturer's Cup for Chevrolet in 1969.

The history is deep with this racer and I plan on preserving the best I can.

My Original post on Yenko.net (http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=23662#Post23662)

After a few detours and distractions I am finally starting the complete restoration of Super Stock vintage racer with what I believed to be one hangup - the paint will be a b@*ht to duplicate.

But that's not the case, its not going to be that simple.

:(

With that said...

I have been asked to sell the car in its current condition by a few gentlemen back in Nebraska. They have shown some interest in its completion and return to the "West Central Division". They are looking to put the car in one of two museums. One of the museums has one of the original 427 power plants in their engine collection.

I will probably post this question for further discussion in the proper location on this site.

What a dilemma, do I restore the car to my standards (will it be good enough) knowing it will probably end up in a museum or let it go now and let them restore it to their standards.

Well, see my link to the first of a series of videos that I started documenting the cars progress. Thanks TJ for all your help with the production and publication of the video. It turned out fantastic.

First thing I would do is figure out what the car is.

With the BE rear and cowl hood it looks like it can be a 427 COPO Camaro unless they added those parts when it was new.

Do you have any original dealer paperwork showing it is a 427 COPO Camaro?

If it is an original 427 Camaro it can be a very high value car restored to original or as a race car

Nice Video---Too bad about that hit on the pass. side. Do you know what happened? Was it done at the track or while being street driven?

You will probably find out a lot more about the car if you start a thread at classracer.com that is similar to this one.

Classracer.com is dedicated to stock and super stock drag racing, lots of racers there that raced in the 60s and 70s.

Joe, i have the original warranty book and POP, also Al Mac is still alive and kicking and he says car was a program car which was never invoiced.

Glenn, one of the previous owners decided to drive this car on the street after having a few cold ones. Sad day...

there is a post on team chevelle you should see
quote//

"So owner #2 stops by tonight with pictures and a ton of great stories. The best story is that when he bought the car is had the original motor in it. The motor had a spun bearing he says and the block was not cracked. To make a long story short, he said the motor went with a gentleman that owned a 69 Camaro called the R D Shaker. The camaro was going to be used in nostalgic drag racing. At one point 25 plus years ago that gentleman called him to see if he wanted to buy the motor back. Only thing else he could remember, is that the guy who owned the camaro name was Rich. I've tried searching the net for R D Shaker but am coming up empty. Anyone ever heard of this car?"

Awesome car Rich. I just learned the history of your car while trying to track down the block from my 70 ls6. I live just outside of Omaha, Ne where you purchased the car back in 02. From the history I have, I was told the block to my ls6 went into the R D Shaker back in the 70's. I recently just uncovered this ls6 car about a month ago after it had been stored away for about 25 years. Could you please call Steve at 402-968-3287 with any info. Thanyou very much.

WoW this car was also worked on by Dick Harrell

from the youtube post on this Camaro.......

"The next stop for this camaro was over to Dick Harrell's St Louis, Missouri Performance Center where he prepared all of the camaro's 427 power plants (including an all Aluminum ZL-1 427), the camaro's chassis, and the camaro's multiple transmissions. "MR CHEVROLET'S" shop converted the camaro from it's original Muncie four speed to a Harrell Performance Center prepared Turbo 400 transmission. Dick's shop also supplied a specially prepared "Clutch Driven" Turbo 400 transmission for use later in the 1969 season."

You should also post on the Harrell web site to see if anyone there has info on the car

the pop shows it is a 427 Camaro

A guy posted on Team Chevelle about finding an LS6 Chevelle that had lost its engine to a Camaro race car and I told him this guy may have his engine. It turned out to be the original engine to his LS6 but I don't know if they were able to re-unite.

Very cool video. That car needs to definetly be restored. But the question is to stock or as a race car.
