View Full Version : boggs down after launch

Hi all,
I went to the races for the first time on friday night and made 6 passes on the track.
My first pass was very easy as it was my first time at the track, I got wicked traction and got a mild launch. My second time around I got a better launch but my engine bogged down considerably and then picked back up and I made my pass. I made 2 more passes with the same results. I took a long break and made another pass, It went great with my best pass of the night. But my very next pass it bogged down again and I got fustrated and decided to call it a night.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can start to look for this annoying problem?
I have a 350 4sp with 11-1 pistons, edelbrock intake and a carter carb. Thanks!

Sounds like your car doesn't like heat. Did you open the hood between runs to let the hot underhood air out? The carb may be a little rich and when the underhood temp goes up it becomes real rich causing a stumble. It could be boiling the fuel from heat. A real good practice is to cool the engine between runs anyway you can.

Cooling it down between passes might help a little, some guys actually drop bags of ice on their intake too.

But . . . it sounds to me like your acelerator pump is running out of juice a little prematurely. The acelerator pump helps the engine transition from idle/cruising speeds to wide open throttle.

With a Holley you can change to a smaller squirter to make the shot last longer OR you could put in a larger cam to make a bigger shot. I'm not sure exactly what to do with an Carter though.

Maybe a Carter guru out there could be a little more specific than me, I think they're pretty similar to the Edelbrock.

I've had similiar problems with holleys and it turned out to be running lean. The car would launch hard for about 50-60 ft and then fall on it's face, and take off again. Drove me nuts thinking it was a pump shot problem. After jetting up a couple sizes it was cured.......

Could be running lean, which causes an engine to run hot. Adjust your fuel mixture and make a couple of runs. The carb also might not be big enough for the 11:1 pistons. All you can really do is tinker with it until it is right.

It would be helpful to know exactly when it bogs down and for how long. There could be a couple things to try depending on where the bogs happens.

All of the above suggestions make sense to me, Here's another. Could the metering rods be hanging up? I know that is a common Quadrajet problem, this would cause the car to run too lean as the above posts suggest.
