Fellas I have a question. Whenever I warm my race car up to operating temp above 200 I have to wait till it cools down for it to start again. It seems to run awesome now. I have spark when it wont start and timing is at about 16* btc. I have even taken a dist out of my other car and popped it in still no start. Wazzup wit dis ting? It cranks like it has compression but no fire at all.

The coil often times will not provide enough spark after its hot due to increased resistance. That comes to mind. Is the spark nice and blue or is it orange in color?

A couple things to check,

1. Any starting vacuum? May have throttle plates too far open.
2. Observe tach, when cranking should indicate 200 rpm. If not, need more starter to turn over faster to create a vacuum signal to suck fuel into air stream.
3. Is fuel in fuel bowl? Use a pipe cleaner down the vent tube to see fuel level. Fuel could be percolating and boiling away.
4. Retard timing to 8-10 degrees just to see if it starts.
5. Spark may be too weak to ignite fuel. All battery current going to starter to crank and not enough current flow thru coil to generate enough spark energy.
6. Starter solenoid contact defective, the yellow wire going to coil to provide ignition voltage during the starting event, or the wire itself is bad.

Just a few suggestions....not in any particular order

Thanks Guys! I dropped in another dist. But the cranking rpm thing may be something. If I remember from HEI class isnt there a threshhold crank rpm that the module needs to see? I believe the spark Jumped an sr21 spark tester= 40KV. I pretty sure the components are not to blame. I need to look into the voltage and rpm during cranking. Thanks again guys. anyone else? as always I will post my info/data.

I read in an old string where Ignition man had suggested gapping down as compression increases to as low as .030-.032. Could an 045 gap be too much for my hei and 13.5:1 compression. Has anyone seen that before?

I want to say that I know I am pushing My hei beyond what most people expect from the setup but I really need to know for my education what is happening and why. So I would appreciate anyone input.

The wider the gap, the more potential needed to jump, the hotter (temp) the coil gets.

I have seen and heard, never experienced it, HEI coils do heat up quite a bit. Might check inside the cap and smell for burnt residue. Also, check out the current path spark takes, any corrosion can lead to high resistance when hot.

I run points and I gap at .040-.042, no problems yet, knock on my head.

As Hotrod suggested, hold plug wire 1/4 inch away from ground, crank over, BLUE is BEST.

Check hot cranking voltage at dist, plus when hot try running a hot wire directly from battery to distributor, see if it runs then.

I never figured it out, flatops w/4 reliefs, 64 cc, .015 steel head gasket, stock deck, 3.48 stroke.

Compression gauge reads 190-200#

Well I still have this prob. I hate to buy an MSD box and not have it cure the problem. The spark while cranking is crisp Blue/white and it jumps my spark tester gap while cranking. The accel pump shooters are squirting fuel. I have had timing all over the place it still acts the same way. Can anyone suggest somewhere I can research for info. I have read of spark punch through, a sort of cavitation like a boat prop only electrical. Is my compression 13.41:1 forcing the use of a capacitive discharge system?

Epoxy filled coils will cook and drop thier spark voltage way down. I could envision a point where the motor will still run, but starting would be difficult.
