im putting a 350 in my 86 berlinetta and
i dont have a distributer for it.
and i have no headers or manifolds for the exhaust
so i need to know if my delco remny distributer for the 305 thats in it
will work on the 350?
if soo when i transfer it how do i get the timing right without
the fancy gadgets for the timing?

second.
will manifolds for a 305 fit on the 350 just by bolting them on?
or do i HAVE to go and get manifolds for the new engine?
and is there any shorty headers that are the same size as stock manifolds?
or if i want to upgrade to headers to i have to redo my exhaust?
cuz i spent a LONG time getting my exhaust right.
and i would like not to have to rip it out and start again
THANKS FOR ANY AND ALL HELP!!!

your 305 distributor will work BUT the new 350 a flat tappet cam or is it OE roller? a OE roller will need a melonized gear to run on the roller cam - you will need a timing light to set the timing.
Exhaust- the worst thing about a third gen is the exhaust a set of TPI exhaust manifolds are the best OE will work 305 and 350 are the same- the better option would be some headers - I used SLP on my 87 they are stainless and not cheap then I added the dual cat option that the 89-91's had and a SLP cat back. In all I have over 1k in my exhaust and I will tell you its a pain to work on - replacing plugs- UGH! so be prepared - there isnt anything easy to do underhood on a third gen. you may want to hang out at thirdgen.org they have lots of good info there. dont say you were'nt warned I dont miss working on my 87 but now my son owns it and he hates working on it too.

yeah but are there headers that are the same size or do i have to redo it
and i think the motor im getting has a oe roller butttt....
i have another crank from my brothers camaro and im certain that its flattap.

and for the timing???
can i just take it to a mechanic and have them do it cheap
or should i invest in a timing gun?

Well they will juist set up the idle thats it...what really mater is what happens when the car is moving right...power/economy
Every engine, and depending on the car weight, gear ratios etc has different requirements in timing and carburation ....
There are heaps of threads on how to do it, a cool 101 on explaining how it all works, and explanations on how to set up mixtures and timing curves, including how to change how many degs in a GM pionts and HEI dizzy.
Basic tools
Timing light
Marked harmonic balancer to 50 deg (again old threads how to)
In car vac guage
9/16 ring spaner with a bend in the shaft (dizzy hold down bolt)
File (to change the tail shape of the counterweights)

I fail to understand how people can put a new engine in a car, and not use a timing light on intial fire....without a timing light, the engine gets over advanced on intil fire up and seconds and its not uncommon for horrible things happen like collapsed piston skirts.
Any person who opens a hod and does anything morethan checks the oil and water hast to have a timing light in the tool box...if not, take up needle piont
Sry for being blunt, but thats the reality.
