View Full Version : No Fuel to carb
Dan Smart Sep 3rd, 01, 02:56 PM I tried to get the new BB started & could not turn the engine over for the first time.
Everything is new from the fuel tank, sending unit, ss 3/8" fuel line, Holley Mech fuel pump & rebuilt Bigs Holley 780 carb.
I have not seen any fuel in the carb or any comming from the tank to the pump. I hand fed gas into the tank, about 2 gal, but nothing gets to the carb.
Do I need to add more fuel to increase tank pressure ?
How about blowing out the line ? How should this be done ?
Maybe The fuel pump is not correctly lined up with the fuel rod in the block.
Need some suggestions guys. I need to hear this engine running.
Thanks, Dan

Do you mean it would not phisically turn over? Or just wouldnt fire? If gas is getting to the carb, you should see accelerator pump squirt in the carb when you open the throttle. It sounds like the fuel system got a makeover. maybe its taking a while to get to the carb. A shot of carb cleaner (then replace the air filter!) can fire it a few seconds at a time to help prime it. Sure do have to have fuel! I usually just check for it with the accelerator pump. if you never get any, the rod for the pump sounds unlikely. I'm not sure if it would fit in if it fell during installation. an air leak between ank and pump would just suck air. I've had to use the carb cleaner before to get a pump primed. I've always replaced the air filter before turning the key, one time it backfired and there was a small fire!
Dan Smart Sep 4th, 01, 01:21 PM The engine will crank but not fire up. The line to the carb shows no sign of fuel.
I think I'll go to the gas station & fill up the 5 gallon can a few times to completely fill the tank. Maybe that will do something.
I can't see shooting carb cleaner down the carb if there's no fuel in there.
Thanks, Dan

The carb cleaner, (a small squirt), if you are just lacking fuel, will fire the engine for a few seconds each time. I've done this before so when it fires, the fuel pump runs faster than cranking speed to pull fuel to it quicker. If you're worried about something in the tank not connected, you could remove the line from the pump and blow into it, someone listening at the filler neck should hear bubbles. One problem car I had, I went as far as plugging the line at the tank and using a vacuum guage at the pump to see if there was an air leak. I think the fuel pump can be checked with a vacuum guage on the inlet side while cranking. A manual might say more about that.
JohnZ Sep 5th, 01, 01:00 PM Fill the float bowls first through the bowl vent tubes with a baster or syringe so it has enough fuel to start and run; with an all-new fuel system, it has to run steadily for a bit to get fuel from the tank to the pump to the carb.

68and69ss Sep 6th, 01, 04:46 PM Hey Dan what I would do if you have a air compressor is put air in the tank with a rag around the hose. This will push gas up to the carb so you can fire that BB up, lets here it run. P S Dan don't put the hose down in the gas or it will come back out on you.

RickD Sep 7th, 01, 03:14 PM You could also disconnect the line from the pump to the carb ( at the pump ) and make sure that you installed the fuel pump correctly.Turning the motor over a few times will show if there is gas being pumped. However, when I changed over the fuel system it took a few tries by dribbling gas down the carb to get it to run.

Get it runnin' yet? What's the answer?
Dan Smart Sep 13th, 01, 09:34 AM Thanks for the replys.
I haven't had the time to work on the car lately, but when I got home the other day, I thought I'd try to start her up. Again, nothing. I didn't even get the engine to crank. Back to the drawing board.
I might have grounded the coil or a ground might be loose.
I'm not getting anything from the starter.
Maybe a little time this Saturday will open up for me to try again.
Thanks, Dan
