You may have read my post on the lifter noise I couldn't get rid of. Thought of, heard about and tried everything regarding the oil system to valve springs. Had the lifters out at one point, disassembled them, cleaned out the oil and reinstalled. No help. I finally bit the bullet and replaced the cam and lifters with a Crane Energizer set. Voila!!! Problem fixed! Took the old (1 hour run time)cam to a machine shop that had a computerized cam profiler. Discovered that the cam had .046 runout. Seems this would cause the lifter to pump up when the cam rolled over on the high side then when it came around to the low side the lifters couldn't compensate and thuis the clatter. Never had or heard of this happening...ever! The old cam was a generic cam that came as prt of a shortblock kit. After getting an earfull from the machine shop about getting what you pay for I thought I would share the conclusion to the mystery. This is one to go into the experience file that probably (and I hope not to me ever) won't happen again for a long time.

Thanks for the info john. It's nice to hear the conclusion, and ultimate remedy, to some of the problems we have. I remember reading the posts about it. I have a cam mystery also. I'll be doing the cam swap thing here this winter. 6 in. of vac at a 1K rpm. with 447 lift & 222 dur.? I don't THINK so. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

Hey John,

Man I sure am glad your delima is finally over, we have all been bit some way or another along these lines, but not all are big enough to admit it. Way to go.

Steve, sounds like the spec you quoted is that of the 3863151 GM 350 horse cam. If that is the cam you have and it's off that much, I would check the degree on it.

John,
Who was the maker of your old cam so I know to steer clear of them in the future? It seems like they're lacking in the quality assurance dept.

another thing to remember with that "get what you pay for thing" is most people dont have enough $$$ for the top quality parts the first time,

but they have enough money to do it Twice or three times to get it right...

sometimes getting a good quality part can make all the difference in the world.

I neglected one important thing. I want to thank all you guys for pitching in and helping me sort things out. You don't know, or maybe you do how much it helps to get different perspectives on a particular problem. I also want to thank the sponsors of this site as it is without exception the best source of information, assistance and ideas I have ever found. Once more, thanks to everyone and I just hope I can return the favor.
