My 69 Camaro gasgauge is showing about 2 inches past full, whether the key is on or off or the tank is empty or full...anyway of checking the gauge, or could it be the sending unit in the tank????
it sux running out of gas!

the gauge must be shorted to a constant power source. If you have fusesi would pull one at a time to see if you can locate the cicuit its shorted to. Or you could pull the dash and follow the wire till you find the short.

Unplug the connector in the trunk. With the Key on if the gauge returns to E then the short is between the connector and the fuel sending unit. If it stays above full then the problem is somewhere between the gauge and the connector in the trunk.

Shouldnt the guage go to empty when the key is off? If it does than the short should be before the guage, not in the sending unit or the wires going to it.

Nope, gauge is powered from an accessory power supply, only powered when the key is in run. When the key is off the needle on the gauge stays put.

A short before the gauge would have no effect on the gauge except to blow the fuse.
